Hello everyone, I thank you for any efforts to answer my question. I understand anyone is subject to being hacked. What I am not understanding is why HP is contacting me when I bought a Dell recently from Best Buy. When I got on the phone with them I was informed about many error reports about someone trying to access my laptop. I was told they were going to remotely clean the sytem. However, they would not do a thing until I bought a SSL program. I was then informed that Best Buy's program Webroot was not adiqute to keep my system free of issues. Just looking for your assistance to help me understand what may be going on.

THIS IS A SCAM!!  Neither HP, Microsoft nor any other company sends emails, pop ups, or phone calls of any kind advising that you may have a problem.

 

If you clicked on any links, allowed them to remote into your computer, or went to any websites please Submit a Support Ticket ASAP.  (Now would be a good idea....)

Microsoft never issues this type of warning or email or anything of a sort!  Please see the following link for Microsoft's official word on this:

"Neither Microsoft nor our partners make unsolicited phone calls (also known as cold calls) to charge you for computer security or software fixes.

 

Cybercriminals often use publicly available phone directories so they might know your name and other personal information when they call you. They might even guess what operating system you're using.

 

Once they've gained your trust, they might ask for your user name and password or ask you to go to a website to install software that will let them access your computer to fix it. Once you do this, your computer and your personal information is vulnerable."

In the final analysis always ask yourself this question when receiving such contact...how the hell would they know that I am infected?

 

Also, be wary of anyone 'rubbishing' another product, especially if they are purporting to come from a 'professional' organisation.
