Steve Zurier of DarkReading.com talked with Charles Tomeo, VP of Worldwide Business Sales at Webroot, about some of the recent studies that have been published on why small to medium sized businesses are taking security more seriously.
The Webroot survey found that post-WannaCry, ransomware rose this year from the fifth to the third most-cited threat SMBs think they're susceptible to – and it is No. 1 in the United Kingdom. Webroot's Tomeo says these results track against what he has seen in the market, adding that ransomware incidents have kept his staff very busy during the past year.
For many small companies, he says, getting hit with ransomware becomes a "panic moment" in which they often tend to pay the ransom, even though the FBI advises them not to. Even when they do pay the ransom, the fraudsters might only give them back 50% of their files – or sometimes none at all.
