Cryptojacking Script Continues to Operate After Users Close Their Browser

The operator of at least one website has been spotted using small windows hidden under the user's Windows taskbar to continue to operate an in-browser miner even after the user closed the main browser window.

The miscreants behind this campaign utilize a tactic known as a pop-under, a trick that allows them to spawn a new window, separate from the main browser. Unless users have transparency enabled with their OS interface, they would have no chance at spotting this hidden window, unless they went looking for rogue processes inside the Windows Task Manager.

See it for yourself!

This scam tricks you into buying fake tech support software

Scammers are using fake messages and a phony "Troubleshooter for Windows" application to get $25 from victims.

The tech-support scammers use fake blue screen of death (BSOD) messages and a phony "Troubleshooter for Windows" application to try to sell a supposed Microsoft security product called "Windows Defender Essentials." The name sounds like two real Windows anti-malware applications:Windows Defender and Security Essentials.

Never fall for pop-up scams!

Android Cryptocurrency Wallet Apps Are a Security Disaster Waiting to Happen

The vast majority of Android mobile apps available on the official Google Play Store that are meant for the management of cryptocurrencies are vulnerable to the most common and well-known vulnerabilities, according to a report published today by Swiss cyber-security firm High-Tech Bridge.

High-Tech Bridge researchers used Mobile X-Ray to scan 90 popular Android apps for common vulnerabilities and various weaknesses and say that over 90% of all apps "may be in trouble."

Make sure you download only reputable apps!

Recent Blu Update Locks Users out of Their Phones

An Android update that Blu shipped to Blu One Life X2 smartphones on November 28th has locked users out of their phones.

"We are currently investigating and trying to fix the issue," a Blu support staffer said. "We apologize for the inconvenience."

In the meantime, the company's advice to ailing customers is to reset the device to factory settings, which is kind of pointless, since this also implies that the user will be losing all of their data.

Consider resetting & starting fresh!
