Cyber News Rundown: DDoS Attacks Take Down Dutch Banks

 

Over the last week, several of the largest banks in the Netherlands have been targeted by a string of DDoS attacks that have shut down much of the country’s banking services, affecting millions of customers. Officials have confirmed that no personal data has been compromised, and it appears they have been able to repair their website issues, allowing customers to slowly resume normal banking activity.

 

The New Way Your Computer Can Be Attacked

 

On January 3, the world learned about a series of major security vulnerabilities in modern microprocessors. Called Spectre and Meltdown, these vulnerabilities were discovered by several different researchers last summer, disclosed to the microprocessors’ manufacturers, and patched—at least to the extent possible.

 

Ploutus.D Malware Variant Used in U.S.-based ATM Jackpotting Attacks

 

The United States Secret Service issued a warning on Friday to financial institutions citing “credible information” about “planned” attacks against U.S. cash machines using malware that can quickly drain ATM machines dry of cash. The warning came a day after ATM maker Diebold Nixdorf also warned its customers of “potential”  ATM Jackpotting attacks moving from Mexico to the U.S.

 

Hacker Steals Over $150,000 Worth of Ethereum From Experty ICO Participants

 

A hacker has tricked Experty ICO participants into sending Ethereum funds to the wrong wallet address. He was able to do this by sending emails with a fake pre-ICO sale announcement to Experty users who signed up for notifications.
