And your question about Adware is an interesting one, and some types of aggressive Adware would sure qualify as Malware. There is some debate at present concerning PUAs (Potentially Unwanted Applications) a type of Adware. Webroot has a setting for detecting many, in Advanced Settings>Scan Settings.
