Amazing, it is about 100 years since Einstein predicted them and they have only just been detected.

They have observed the warping of space-time generated by the collision of two black holes more than a billion light-years from Earth.
 
The international team says the first detection of these gravitational waves will usher in a new era for astronomy.
It is the culmination of decades of searching and could ultimately offer a window on the Big Bang.

Not really sure what the fuss is about as all they have done is confirmed what Albert postulated 100 year ago...bit of a failure taking 100 years to prove that the old egghead was right...;)

That is one way of looking at it Baldrick on the other hand it could also show how ahead of his time the old "egghead" was.

True, but as with many of these things, Jasper, I struggle with the practical/tangible benefits that this will bring humanity.

Well like you Baldrick I struggle as well. There may be a benefit many years down the line if/when we have to get off this planet but as for now I don't think it will make any difference to me.
