Microsoft accused of Windows 10 upgrade 'nasty trick'

By Zoe Kleinman Technology reporter, BBC News   "Microsoft has faced criticism for changing the pop-up box encouraging Windows users to upgrade to Windows 10.
Clicking the red cross on the right hand corner of the pop-up box now activates the upgrade instead of closing the box.
And this has caused confusion as typically clicking a red cross closes a pop-up notification"

Couldn't see this story posted (in another thread)?

The tactics that Microsoft is using to spread Windows10 are becoming more and more unacceptable IMHO. 😞 :@

By Jane Wakefield Technology reporter    Microsoft U-turn on "nasty trick" pop-up - BBC News     "Users were angry that clicking the cross to dismiss the box meant that they had agreed to the upgrade.
Based on "customer feedback", Microsoft said it would add another notification that provided customers with "an additional opportunity for cancelling the upgrade".
The pop-up design had been described as a "nasty trick".
Microsoft told the BBC it had modified the pop-up as a result of criticism"

Agreed...the methods are underhand and they should desist from that but then again I can really understand the frustration that MS must be feeling when they are offeringnthe upgrade to the greatest & best versiion of Windows for free and the unenlightened (those who can but won't even try an upgrade) turn their noses up at the offer.

But regardless...the practices are shoddy to say the least.

Agree. I believe the user should have a choice to upgrade or not. Maybe people didn't like being pushed or tricked to upgrade. I guess we will find out in a few years if not sooner how good Win 10 is and if or how Microsoft Micromanages the updates and Operating System without the users approval. Time will tell. 😉

I don't care for this either. When it was first released it forced the update on my PC one night while I was asleep. I rolled back to 7 but was quite displeased. I don't foresee myself upgrading anytime soon.

Really the only reason I use Windows at all is gaming. I stick to Ubuntu generally and have an Arch Linux partition for testing/learning/etc. I don't think I'll ever use OSX.

I didn't think I would either until I stumbled across an excellent deal on a OSX too good not to turn down. I still  ❤️ ❤️ my Windows 7 but Microsoft is hell-bent on taking that away from me. 😠

Lives could have been put at risk by pushy upgrade

"When you're stuck in the middle of the Central African Republic (CAR) trying to protect the wildlife from armed poachers and the Lord's Resistance Army, then life's pretty tough. And now Microsoft has made it tougher with Windows 10 upgrades."

"If a forced upgrade happened and crashed our PCs while in the middle of coordinating rangers under fire from armed militarized poachers, blood could literally be on Microsoft's hands," said one member of the team."

? ?

I have found that the easiest and best solution is Never10 which is referred to by Triple Helix.at Message 14 of the link in Sherry's post.

It amends the registry with just one click and is just as easily reversed if you later decide you want W10.

https://www.grc.com/never10.htm

You can then happily leave your PC on and unattended in the safe knowledge that you will still have W7 when you return! :D

There's one trick that works which is to set your wifi as metered, and then it will prompt before downloading so as not to go over your data cap. But that doesn't work if you use a hard wired connection.

I still don't care for win 10.   I feel MS rushed to put out Win 10.  As the saying goes, "Profit before People".  Your right ? the user should have the choice!  Maybe MS will gradually phase out previous OS's like MS Win XP.   Hummm perhaps MS will "sneak" win 10 upgrade through a windows update 😞   Anyway, that's my opinion.

Thanks for reading.  ;)

Dermot, you need to take a look and use one of the apps that are available that provide functionality to take granular control of the telemetry features; they provide granular control of theese which is much better than the whollesale on or off mechanism in Windows 10 which if one uses may lead to reduced functionality. ;)
Baldrick, my view of W10 is that you either take or leave it, and as things stand I choose the latter option. These new 'features' where they apparently have decided to enforce more control over the OS on the user's machine is not what I want. I see it as very similar to Google's way of deciding themselves more capable and knowledgable for what an individual needs, and should want to happen...ergo THEY want to make the decisions, usually based on the data they have been able to collect.

I won't have it like that. End of story.

And thanks, yes I'm aware of all those type of apps you've referred to, but they also possibly shouldn't be needed ideally.

And the greyed-out settings that @ mentioned should not happen imho.
Userlevel 7
Hi Dermot

I completely understand your position...and it is yours to take. ;)

I was only suggesting the aforementioned additional applications given that whilst MS has provided means to turn off most of the telemetry it is not very granular and therefore turning one setting off may make several functions stop working propoerly when you are just interested in some of them...the apps very much allow a more granular approach.

I sense that MS has taken their approach deliberately in the hope that because something that one wants are 'screwed up' by switching off the telemetry settings then the user will opt to leave them on...and so telemetry fully functional. ;)

All the best, Baldrick
Interestingly, one of the big reasons they want to push this is because it is harder to not update on 10. They are stuck with a very large portion of pcs being insecure, non-patched bot magnets. This is bad for everyone.

Yes, pushing people to 10 is a bit much, but they are trying to fix one of the biggest security issues of modern times, if not the biggest. We can't keep having non patched systems Internet facing if we want any kind of security. They let you turn off updates if you have the technical know how to do so, but at that point you know how to manage things yourself. "I don't understand the update" is not a valid reason not to update and I really don't want us to have to make hardware owners financially liable for comprised machines in order to get people to realize the cost to others of not keeping their system secure.

Here is a way to control Windows Updates!

Make Windows 10 notify you before downloading or installing Windows Updates! See Attachment:

Note this work around it not for every user and Webroot doesn't take any responsibility if one makes these changes!

Hi Daniel

Does this workaround apply to Win 10 Home or just to W10 Pro?

I don't see any settings in W10 Home or Pro - as I am still using W7 Pro. 😃 Just trying to get the correct info for when/if I make the move (and whether to get Pro) - although it won't be for a while yet!
