I'm installing an accounting software program onto my computer. it says to turn off all security programs before installing. Do I need to do this, or just make sure it is not scanning during the install?

I have always ignored this advice, because it's the exact advice a malware author would recommend!
Whilst you may trust the software supplier, I would keep your antivirus working, and make any exclusions necessary in the management console after installation.
Hope this helps 🙂

Right, plus this allows Webroot to make notes of the changes being made and better identify the software, it's associated files etc.. to be marked as good, bad or unknown and then further look into them. Then as said above, if need be you can make overrides in the management console afterwards.
