Hi,

Can I run a antivirus scan while my imac is in safe mode? i am getting unwanted sites popping up even with pop up blocker on. There must be malware on my computer somewhere and can't find it.

Thanks,

Linda

Hello lins, welcome to the Webroot Commumity!

First of all, understand that I am NOT a Mac user.. .never have been, so I am not an expert here.  What I can give is how it works in Windows, but also ask our Mac user @ to take a look here as well.

In Windows, a scan certainly can be run.  There is a chance, however, that there is no malware on the Mac at all.

Sherry, can you reply in regards to Safe Mode in Mac, as well as some info regarding PUA's? (Potentially Unwanted Applications).  These are non malware, but very annoying and can slow down computer performance.

Hi Linda,

Welcome to the Community!:D

Sorry you are having problems and that it's taken me so long to respond but I went offline early last night. My suggestions are have you cleaned up all your History/ Cookies in the Safari browser? I use FF as my browser and use Adblock Edge for  popups and I use Ghostery to control Trackers form pages that I use.

Have you gone into Safari Prefrences/Security and checked block popup windows?

Have you preformed a Disc Utility check verifing your permmisions in the system preferences? That might help some. If you are not familiar with that then ask me and I'll show you how. You can also go into the User Account/Login items and see if there are any start up programs that you don't need there. You can empty your trash.

To be honest I've never had to go into safe mode to uninstall or clean up my Mac from there. I do use MacTuneUp, App Cleaner & Tidy up. But you need to be careful with these apps and I don't use them often . Safe Mode to me would be advisable only if support tech issues such. There are plenty of sites online for going into safe mode with a Mac.

You can go here to the Apple Community for some nifty ideas and solutions. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5055391?start=0&tstart=0

Also here is another good article http://www.cultofmac.com/269514/when-mac-slows-down-give-tune-up-macrx/

All in all if you are having problems with your Mac then issue a Support Ticket free of charge and explain to them you have some bad PUAs that you cannot get rid of. I wouldn't mess with safe mode unless you really know what you are doing.

If you need more instructions I can tell you how to do what I've suggested.

Please get back to us if you get this issue resolved so that we can help other Mac users.

Hope this helps,

Hello Linda,

I've gone into safe mode and did a scan with Webroot and you can go into safe mode and clear your history and see if there is anything going on. In fact I'm in Safe Mode now. You can get rid of stubborn programs if needed. But be careful!

Do you know how to get into Safe Mode?

But like I suggested you could have Webroot Tech Support assist in these PUAs.
