In Chrome, I may click a response on a website, like choosing an item or clicking to read an article, and out of nowhere a new tab

will pop up, taking over my screen , often with a voice saying call this number right away to remove this virus.  Sometimes I can close the tab, sometimes the only way to get rid of it is by Task Manager, and sometimes I have to power off to get free from it.

I have scanned with Webroot SecureAnywhere many times, but it detects no threats.  I'm not overly techie - is there anything else I can do, or do I just go to a factory reset or something that wipes everything clean?

Hi kennedyc7

Welcome to the Community Forums.

My first suggestion would be that you install an ad blocker to see if that deals with what is obviously a scam probably from a driveby.

Good free Ad Blocker like the ones suggested below:

For Internet Explorer Ad Block Plus: https://adblockplus.org/

For Firefox uBlock: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/ublock-origin/?src=ss or Privacy Badger: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/privacy-badger-firefox/

Google Chrome uBlock: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/ublock-origin/cjpalhdlnbpafiamejdnhcphjbkeiagm?hl=en or Privacy Badger: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/privacy-badger/pkehgijcmpdhfbdbbnkijodmdjhbjlgp

Give the Chrome related ones a try and let us know if that does the business, and if not then we will look at another course of action.

With uBlock, is there any settings that should be changed? I was testing it. Does this update automatically? The manual update takes way longer than ABP?
Hi skippystyles

Go to Settings (click on uBlock toolbar icon & then click on the gear/cog symbol in the top left hand corner of the popup) and then in the new Chrome page that opens click on the tab withing the page labeled '3rd party filters' and check that the 'Auto-update filter lists' option is checked.

If it is not then tick the box and periodically review that the updates are taking place. If it is already ticked then I believe that the is nothing further that can be done to automate the updates.

Hope that helps?

Thanks noticed a few sites where ABP was detected and this wasn't plus does a better job and is faster at loading a web page, so thank you. 🙂
Hi skippystyles

No worries...it is always good to share knowledge on these types of things. Happy to be able to assist in some small way.

Have yourself a great weekend.
