Is there a legitimate video downloader (YouTube) that webroot won't pickup as a infection/virus? Thanks
Hi wahumpi1

Welcome to the Community Forums.

From what I recall a number of Community members have reported issues when using YTD (YouTube Downloader) but when fixed/resolved they have no further issues at all...but it is a bit of a minefield...to tell the truth.  And of course we often don't hear about the ones that work OK but rather then ones with which there are issues

There were a number of reasons for the issues in general but the main thing was that ones get the latest version from the official/author's web site (BTW...good practice in terms of any app download...so as to avoid issues with bundled PUAs & addons), install that, and see if you get any alerts from WSA.  If you have YTD already installed and it is having issues then uninstall it FIRST before downloading & installing afresh.

If you do get a problem even after the above then I would Open a Support Ticket to let the Support Team know so that they can investigate the latest version and see if they need to whitelist it in the Cloud...sometimes new versions of established apps play like this with WSA, and need to be whitelisted again.

The problem with many of the YouTube download software, especially the fre ones, relates to PUAs or Potentially Unwanted Applications being bundled with them...and whilst they are not malware programs they can be darned annoying, etc., so if you do find that you are getting search engine redirection, popups for ads etc., then come back here and we can look to help out with that too.

Hope that the above helps?  Please come back with any further questions you may have.  And in terms of other 'candidates' I cam across this article, on Tech Radar, that includes 4 other downloaders that we have not, as far as I can remember, heard about here in terms of issues.

Regards

thank you! YOu said "...but the main thing was that ones get the latest version from the official/author's web site (BTW...good practice in terms of any app download...so as to avoid issues with bundled PUAs & addons), install that, and see if you get any alerts from WSA."

I do not know what the "latest verdion from the official/author's web site" means? How do I access this website? and what is it?

Thanks Baldwin!
Hi wahumpi1

Apologies for not making myself clearer first time out.

Whilst the author of an app will generally either provide a diresct download of their software from their own website or if for what ever reason they cannot then they will usually get the software hosted on another site. Both are usually fine but what one can also find is other sites (such as cnet, softpedia, etc....and I am not saying that these specifically are not reputable) that will also offer the software for download but will 'wrapper' it or include it in their own installer to which they can and do add addons...many of which are browser add-ons for various tasks such as quick search tools.

We call these PUAs or Potentially Unwanted Applications, precisely because of their aforementioned characteristics or behaviour...and WSA does detect and remove many PUA's, and it is this detection & removal that can cause what you are trying to avoid, i.e., a YouTube downloader that WSA won't pick up as an infection.

Hope that helps in clarifying the point that you raised?  Please feel free to come back for further clarifications if required.

If you are using Firefox as your Browser you can install this Extension and you will be able to download many videos from YouTube and other site's.
