Laptop has been slow the last few days. When shutting down I keep getting notice for 127 updates to be installed. 127 !! I shut it down manually without doing them. It seems extremely excessive. Problem? What should I do?

My first port of call would be to open up the WIndows UPdate tool and click on the 'Check for UPdates' link to get it the recheck the number of updates outstanding.
If that returns the same results I would the take a look at this MS article about how to reset Windows Updates...it also includes links to the Windows Updates Troubleshooter (Mr FixIt) that can also be run to check if there is an issue and usuall fix it. Note this assumes a Windows 7 installation but you should be able to find the link to the equivalent for Windows 8.
