McAfee came with my HP Windows laptop, but I purchased Webroot and installed. Is it ok to delete the McAfee program/icon? The pop-up McAfee messages are constant and annoying. . . always wanting a purchase.

Of course. Webroot SecureAnywhere is strong and effective against malware on it's own. No need for any other AV.

To add to what Amit said, please do not simply delete the McAfee icon from your desktop: that will not uninstall the software. You will want to either go to your Control Panel, Programs, and uninstall it correctly from there OR use a McAfee uninstaller utility (That is a separate download. We have a link to it HERE.)
