Webroot is currently not contributing to VirusTotal. Can anyone explain why this is the case?

My manager read a blog : http://blog.eckelberry.com/a-bomb-just-dropped-in-endpoint-security-and-im-not-sure-anyone-noticed/

Webroot is not on the credits page of VirusTotal : https://www.virustotal.com/en/about/credits/

Now I have to do some explaining. Please help.
Hi randy1,

Welcome to the Webroot Community,

I don't believe I can answer these questions.

I did find a Blog here back in Feb, 2016. https://www.webroot.com/blog/2016/02/09/some-notes-on-virustotal/ and Webrooters asking for the Virus Total on this Thread.

Webroot uses it's own tools such as the BrightCloud Intelligence and Webroot has a place to determine if a file is bad or not by submitting the file here .

Sorry I am not able to assist you further, Maybe ? ?can advice here? Perhaps ??

Hi Sherry,

Thanks for your post.

It's strange seeing all the other antivirus products in the VirusTotal credits but not Webroot.

I was the one who pushed for us to install Webroot now I have to explain this situation to management

Regards,

Randy
Hi Randy!

Webroot is the best AV out there IMO. Webroot as you know has free Technical Support as no other AV has out there...but...

So sorry to hear hear of your deliema. 😞
Hi Randy,

Maybe this article can help? https://community.webroot.com/t5/Announcements-and-Release-Notes/Demand-for-Smarter-Cybersecurity-Solutions-Drives-Strong-Growth/m-p/252577
Hello and Welcome to the Webroot Community!

I did ask that question many times myself. So I will give the same info I was told by Webroot.

1. If you were a malware writer where would you check to see if it's detected by many AV's and AM's?

2. Webroot doesn't want to give the Malware Writers the upper hand so they can't check with VirusTotal or Jotti https://virusscan.jotti.org/en and any other online scanners so my Idea here: https://community.webroot.com/t5/Ideas-Exchange/Adding-a-Webroot-SDK-to-VirusTotal/idi-p/7462 is not in the best interest of Webroot or there customers and I accept that as Webroot has the superior WIN Cloud Database and it's millions of sensors.

HTH,

Daniel 😉
Thank you Daniel for the assistance!!:D
Hi randy1

Welcome to the Community Forums.

I do not see the major issue here, i.e., that Webroot does not use VT's services. That is a choice that has been made and they are above board in how they handle it; they do not contribute to it and rightly therefore do not avail themselves of the information available (which actually is not VT generated but comes from the returns they get from the online scanners from 50+ security companies...some of which is dubious at best...VT is actually really just the equivalent of the Webroot Intelligence Network, which is Webroot's own Cloud based whitelist & threat repository).

Whilst there is no doubt that Webroot contributing to the VT database would greatly enhance it I cannot really see what  Webroot would get from doing so other than perhaps a second opinion some of which will be dubious at best due to the inclusion of returns from some of the non mainstream AV/IS/AM applications, which tend to report false positives, etc.

Just my thoughts on the matter...for what they are worth.

Regards, Baldrick
