Webroot Secure Anywhere Antivirus detected malware and threat of infection while I was in the process of downloading Windows Media Player for the Updated Windows 8.1 OS. The threat has been removed; but I don't understand the nature of it or what I can/should do to avoid a repeat. Could there be something in my "Settings" that is leaving me open to threats?

Hello MAKathleen, welcome to the Webroot Community!
Were you downloading directly from Microsoft? Frequently third party download sites add extra "trial" or "Value Added" software to the downloads. We call those junk as they often are not desireable and that may well be what WSA detected.
It sounds like your settings are fine as it is doing it's job and identifying possible threats. If you have any worry that you may still have an infection, you can submit a Trouble Ticket to have Webroot Support take a look.
NOTE: Once you submit a trouble ticket, please be patient. Adding to or editing your ticket will cause a change in the date/time stamp and move your ticket to the back of the queue. Being the Holiday Weekend, while the Support System remains staffed 24/7, one can expect longer than normal response times from Support.
