I've just noticed this, although my lock is grey. It's like this even when I'm on my banking site. Quite worried now!
Also I have notification icons that either don't appear at startup or will disappear later including the Webroot icon. Icon behavior for these is set to "Show icons and notifications" and this will occur whether or not "Always show all icons and notifications on the taskbar" is checked or not. If I attempt to change icon behavior on a missing icon to "Hide icon and notifications" then change back to "Show icons and notifications", I receive the following message: "This notification icon is not currently active. It will be shown next time it becomes active.", at the moment, the volume icon has a red cross and when I hover says that the Audio Service is not running. Sometimes other icons can be effected. Whats going on?!

Hi Linda!
I might be a bit dense tonight, been running a pretty decent fever for the last couple of days. I have been tossing through my mind for the last 30 minutes and I am just coming up blank. (UGH)
@ are you still around my friend?

Hello Linda it sounds like you have some OS issues as some Services are not starting up and or crashing did you try a reboot to see if the Icons come back and are working correctly? Have you ever done a complete OS reinstall with the Windows DVD also can you tell me what OS you are using and if it's 32bit or 64bit? And please the make of the PC and if it has a Recovery Partition or Disc's?@ wrote:

Yeah, I tried re-booting, icons are back and OK, padlock is still grey, even on e-mail, Facebook and banking sites.@ wrote:

I'm using a Dell laptop, with Windows 7 Home Premium, 64bit. I do have some discs somewhere but I havn't done any re-installations etc. as, you might already know, I don't like fiddling about with things that I don't have 100% confidence in doing. I've just been reading that Windows is gonna fade out Windows 7 at the end of this month and that they are to stop their on-line support from January 2015! Do you think I should get a newer version of Windows, is 10 the latest?
Thanks
Linda
Hi Linda
Hope that you are well?
No, Windows 10 is the next version due out and whilst there is what is termed a Technical Preview of it it is not due for release until most likely mid-2015. The currently version is Windows 8.1, and you would have the option of buying an upgrade from Windows 7...but some people do not like the idea of upgrading, etc. My suggestions in this case would be to go to a Computer store that you trust and ask them about the options you have.
In terms of your current installation you could try to do a Windows Repair; that is a feature that you can boot into and in then goes through a diagnostic of the Windows installation and then tries to fix anything that it finds to be corrupted/incorrect. I myself have not tried one under Windows 7 but there is quite a lot of information out on the Web if that option interests you.
A good starting point would be this article from Microsoft on the Repair feature.
Hope that some of the above is of assistance?
Regards, Baldrick

" I've just been reading that Windows is gonna fade out Windows 7 at the end of this month"
Just to add to Baldrick's wise advice. Not sure what you were reading, but Windows 7 SP1 still has a long way to go yet, excepting Mainstream (incl. Phone as you said) support. Here's info about Windows Lifecycle and Support Lifecycle:

Hi Baldrick, I'm fine thanks,
there's lot's to think about there thanks. Thinking of taking the old laptop in to get things sorted but I don't have too much faith in the place I take it to at the moment. I have a 'Whatever Happens' care plan that is supposed to take care of things if something goes wrong but the last couple of times I've had to take it in they've just run a diagnostic and deep scan and said they couldn't find anything wrong. Something I did myself before taking it there. I'm running the Dell diagnostic tool as we speak....... don't Windows download all relevant system drivers when they automatically update... according to Dell there's a total of 25 files to be downloaded, 1 urgent! but has passed the PC Checkup.

Hi Dermot7, meant to say Microsoft has announced it will no longer supply certain versions of the OS to hardware partners from October 31. This was amongst the suggestions thrown up in a search for laptop tracking; looking into security tracking software.

Yeah.. that is normal. Even though finding a new Windows 7 PC might be hard, especially at the Box Boxes like Best Buy, since Windows 8 came out, it has still been available in the OEM channels. When a new OS comes out, while the previous one might be harder to find, Microsoft still officially ships it to OEM's for quite a while. I guess we are finally at the end of the purchase life of Windows 7 though not the support life.@ wrote:

Glad to hear it...that you are fine.
I have a Dell tablet too, and use the built in diagnostic app to keep it up to date and I must say I find it pretty good. My advice would be avoid your 'place to get things fixed' as they sound like a lot of the purported PC specialists, and go with what Dell is advising on the basis that it is a Dell machine and they should know what they are about, especially in the case of the 'urgent'...but make sure that you have created a System Restore POint (assume you know how otherwise post back for help) just before you apply the updates advised by Dell...just in case.
As for the "don't Windows download all relevant system drivers when they automatically update" question...well, Yes and No...it depends on the drivers concerned. If they are MS drivers, i.e., system drivers then Yes...but drivers for 3rd party hardware, i.e., sound card, graphics card, motherborad, etc., then usually know although sometimes yo will find that in the Optional Dowload section of Windows Updates, there may well be 'Optional' updates such as these lurking which Windows Update will not apply automatically...I currently have one for my graphics card that I have yet to find time to apply.
Hope that helps somewhat? Do post back if you have further points to clarify and we will see if we can help out.
Regards, Baldrick
Thanks Baldrick, think I'll search for a Dell specialist in town to clean things up and make everything hunky dory again.

Hi Linda
You are most welocme...if you Google "accredited Dell repairs UK" I think that you may find what yo are looking for but not knowing what part of the country you reside in I cannot be sure.
Let us know how you get on.
