Hi, I am trying to update my vista laptop but it hangs on checking for updates. I have got the problem with Windows security centre showing my anti virus shutdown and I cleared that with your recommended fix. This has only happened since last Tuesday when the new updates were released by Microsoft. Could there possibly be a conflict with updates and WSA since the last update release? I have had no problems at all in the 3 years I have been using WSA but I am reluctant to disable my anti virus in order to check if their is a conflict. I managed to check for and install updates last month no problem it seems to be this months that is the problem. Any suggestion would be gratefully accepted and apologies if this is a Windows problem and not caused by WSA. Thanks
Hi ARTEMIS96

When it hangs does investigation of the Updates history give any indication as to a reason for the hang, i.e., is the Update process failing on a specific or specific updates, and if to which one(s)? Often, if this happens there is an error code that one can Google for information about potential solutions, etc.

The reason I ask this is because this only happening since last Tuesday when the new updates were released by Microsoft, is most likely the explanation. Now, whether this is due to a new conflict between Updates and WSA since the last update release is a moot point and unfortunately it may be too early to say.

But for that reason I would advise that you Open a Support Ticket to advise the Support team of this issue; they may then wish to investigate further but at least you are on their radar in case others log a similar problem.

In the interim, and notwithstanding your reply to the question about a possible stalled specific update/error code, please take a look at this thread from the MS Support Forums...it may be of some use, but personally I am hoping that the issue is a specific Update causing the issue as that should be easier to find and progress.

Hi Baldrick

The update process is not even getting as far as updating. I have got it on "checking for updates" and the green bar is just moving along endlessly not detecting anything. Now I am sure there must be some updates as there always is but I have left it checking for 4 hours and still nothing. Maybe I should open a support ticket as you suggest as I have not installed any new updates since last month. Thanks for your prompt reply.
Hi ARTEMIS96

OK, thanks for the information. Presumably you cancel the update process at some point? If so then do a 'View History' and check to see when the last Update was undertaken and what it's status was, i.e., 'Successful' or 'Failed' and if 'Failed' you should be able to get more information from WU as to the reason.

What you can alkso try is to reset Windows Update entirely and see if that helps to 'free up' the update process. I have done this on a number of occassions and it has worked for me, so it is worth a try.

Please see this Article from the Windows Support Forums as to how to do this, and if yo decide to try then let us know how you get on.

Hi Baldrick have already tried the "FIXIT" process without success and the rest looks a bit daunting as I am not too computer savvy. Thanks for your help may have to take it to a computer expert!
Hi ARTEMIS96

OK, well that is a shame...that the FixIt Tool did not work for you.

Have a look at this Article from the MS Support Forums and specifically the one labelled 'Windows Update hangs' as there might be something that you may feel suffciently technical to try. Having said that whilst a lot of whatis suggeted looks daunting it is not really...just a case of printing out the instructions and then following them carefully.

Allot of chatter via my MVP channels. 😠
Thanks TripleHelix for that info. Although I am on Vista it does seem like the same problem. Good to know I am not alone in this.I will have to be patient and do as the article says and leave manual check off.

But it does mention Vista as well and fixes are in the last link! http://sm.krelay.de/wu/en/

Thanks,

Hi TrilleHelix , after several attempts I have finally managed to download and install updates, but this is a strange one and never had this trouble before. Will see what next month brings.
Hi Daniel

Many, many thanks for the linkto http://sm.krelay.de/wu/en/, this has proved invaluable in terms of getting WU on my Daughter's laptop working again, especially in relation to reducingthe astronomically high CPU usage associated withe issue.

It is still taking time to get all the updates done but at least I am moving forward...if only slowly...which is much better than going nowhere...fast. :D

Thanks, again.
