Windows Defender is interferring with an Internet Game, Do I need two Firewalls running ??????? Already have a Firewall with Webroot..............   Thanks
Hello zigpig,

Yes you do need  WSA's Firewall which is only outbound and it's suggested to use with Windows Firewall or a Third Party one then you have full inbound & outbound traffic protection! http://www.webroot.com/En_US/SecureAnywhere/PC/WSA_PC_Help.htm#C4_Firewall/CH4a_ManagingFirewall.htm

Also some info about WSA's Firewall on Windows 8 or Windows 10: https://community.webroot.com/t5/Ideas-Exchange/Outbound-connections-fw-control-in-Win-8-Win-8-1/idi...

The firewall in Windows 8 is much easier to work with than previous platforms because of the built in OS controls. Every vendor needs to use the same APIs now (the older methods are deprecated), but that's exactly why we aren't doing it currently - no matter what vendor wraps the APIs, it will be exactly the same underlying calls which are built into the OS, and you can use the OS UI to do the same job if you want to customize it.

The reason why we have the functionality on Windows 7 and not Windows 8 is because Microsoft doesn't expose the same normalized interfaces on Windows 7 (or require vendors to use the new APIs).

Please look at this THREAD explaining Windows Defender. You do not need both IMO.

Hope this helps?

Hi zigpig

If I may just add to what Sherry has posted...please do not confuse Windows Defender and Windows Firewall...they are two completely different things undertaking two very different roles.

You can disable both; Windows Defender should be disabled if you are running WSA as WSA protects you far beftter than Windows Defender so why complicate things and run both...but you can if you want. Windows Firewall, as Sherry has indicated, MUST be run/On with WSA unless you are running a stadalone 3rd party firewall, i.e., a replacement for the built in firewall.

SO...leave Windows Firewall ON but you can disable or switch off Windows Defender.

Hope that helps further?

Windows Firewall is blocking my game ....I was told by Geek Squad I don't need 2 Firewalls running together.
Hello zigpig,

I beg to differ and as Baldrick has also stated.. You do need Windows Firewall and Webroot Firewall enabled as I have this KB Article that explains this. I don't want to go against BestBuy but....

Are you sure it's Windows Firewall that is blocking this game and not Webroot Firewall?

? do you have any further advice with this issue?

Called Geek Squad........They say that Windows Security, Firewall/Defender can BOTH be DISABLED since I have Webroot Complete, This PC is only used for Gaming, So they say I don't need both running.
Hi there!

All I am saying is Webroot Firewall only protects the outbound. Not the inbound. Windows Firewall protects the inbound. What is going to protect your inbound if you don't enable Windows Firewall? You can disable Windows Defender.

Hello @ Geek Squad is wrong and we are right! Now there are no issues running 2 Firewalls like WSA outbound smart Firewall as it will block Malware from calling out to the control center, now Windows Full Firewall is great that's why no need to reproduce the same API's as JoeJ said above: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Application_programming_interface so Webroot and us Security Advisors suggest to run both WSA's Firewall with Windows Firewall like we all do!

And as JoeJ said above about Windows 8 and now Windows 10!

Also Windows Defender will be disabled when WSA is installed see here:

The Geek Squad are definitively incorrect in this case, zigpig, and I personally would advise you to go with the advice from Sherry & Daniel.
