The extension is suddenly malfunctioning on two of my computers, but only in Chrome (it works fine in Firefox and Edge). is it safe to remove the extension and reinstall it?

Great to hear! Sometimes is goes down for no reason but you can check here if it ever happens again. https://status.webroot.com/ which has to do with the Web Shield and other things.
