Officials for the automotive manufacturer, Volkswagen, have confirmed that their internal network was breached by hackers and resulted in the exfiltration of 19,000 files. Based on the content of the targeted files, it is believed that the hackers were focused exclusively on proprietary technology and have been traced back to threat groups located in China. Fortunately, Volkswagen staff were quick to identify the breach and are working to improve their security standings, as well as assist global law enforcement agencies in tracking the suspects.
Frontier Communications works to restore services after cyberattack
Following a cyberattack early last week, officials for the telecom provider, Frontier Communications, are working diligently to restore internet services that were taken offline after discovering unauthorized activity on their internal network. Due to this incident's nature, it is likely that some customer information was illicitly accessed and may be used for future phishing attacks. It is still unclear as to when customers can expect full services to be returned to normal operations.
Security incident halts operations at Synlab Italia
Towards the end of last week, officials for the medical diagnostics provider, Synlab Italia fell victim to a cyberattack that disrupted their operations and forced the company to take all their services offline. With the extremity of their response to this incident, it is believed that ransomware is involved, though no group has yet to claim the attack. Unfortunately, there is no expected time for services to return, as a full network investigation is still underway.
HelloKitty ransomware releases old decryption keys and rebrands
The threat actors behind the now-defunct HelloKitty ransomware group have recently rebranded to HelloGookie and released passwords for stolen data troves alongside decryption keys for past attacks. Amongst the released data is stolen information from the 2022 breach at Cisco and the stolen source code belonging to CD Projekt Red. There are hopes that the released decryption keys for older HelloKitty encryptions will allow past victims to restore their data, if they have not already done so.
Cyberattack forces French hospital offline
Over the weekend, one of the largest hospitals in France, Hospital Simone Veil in Cannes, confirmed that they had fallen victim to a cyberattack, and were forced to take many of their systems offline. All scheduled procedures and appointments have been postponed until the investigation into the attack has finished. Staff have yet to reveal if any data was stolen during the attack, and no ransomware group has taken responsibility for the incident.
