MetaMask users targeted visiting crypto sites

Cryptocurrency owners have once again been warned to be on their guard against scammers following the detection of a new phishing attack.

Visitors to a number of popular cryptocurrency websites, including the likes of Etherscan, CoinGecko and DexTools, are being confronted with suspicious popups.

The attack seems to be targeting those with MetaMask cryptocurrency wallets, which allows users to access their crypto holdings on their mobile device or in a browser, and uses the logo of the notorious Bored Ape Yacht Club group to try and prove its legitimacy.

I know it’s easy to pile on cryptocurrency, but I’m curious if cryptocurrency scams are more or less successful than your standard financial scams.

Maybe it’s all the same. People get scammed out of money all the time. Just seems like there’s less of a safety net with Crypto. What do you even do if your wallet is stolen? Will the police do anything?

From what I can tell via the news the theft itself is just as much a crime to the authorities, it is just a matter of what can be done following the theft that varies so greatly. With a FIAT theft there is typically some sort of insurance or other means of recovering your loss (though even sometimes there you are out of luck). It would be interesting to see how these crimes stack up to a traditional heist.

That makes sense. Yeah, I guess the authorities would take it seriously, but the options for recovering the money are very limited. Unless you got in early on Bitcoin, it’s harder and harder to see the upsides of a crypto investment.
