New to Webroot, Maybe Missing Something. Not Detecting What Others Do?

Hi There,

I'm here in hope that someone can help me or at least guide me to a point where I can follow documentation and set Webroot up right.

First Issue:
Currently I'm running a trial version of Webroot secure anywhere and had hopes of buying the software after the trial as its light on computer resources and fastish at scanning however I have run into a problem. Now because I’m new to this software I’m going to see if I’ve just missed a tick box or haven’t done this right during setup.
I occasionally work on friends / families computers and transfer data via portable hard drives and as such runs a risk of myself getting infected with what they had so at the moment I’m running Webroot alongside another antivirus product for testing.to see if it’s worth ditching my current antivirus at the end of the paid subscription which is currently end of this month.

Now I've currently scanned my portable hard drive from a friends computer which was infected and Webroot has found zero threats with-in his data where as my other antivirus product has been throwing alerts and showing in its scan (ran at different times) that the hard drive currently has 4 + threats on it ranging from Trojans to PUA.

Second Issue:
On rare occasions when I’m searching google or Bing Webroot’s website ratings system just doesn’t show up at all?. However it still blocks malware / suspicious sites dead in their tracks and alerts me with the normal Webroot page..
In short my question is why didn't Webroot pick these up? Is there a tick box or an option that somehow I missed?. And why does Webroot’s web site safety rating just disappear from my google searches sometimes?
I’m currently scanning the advanced options but everything seems normal?
Any help would be nice however at this stage I’m planning to stick to my other paid antivirus after Webroot’s trail has ended.

Cheers!

P.S

I myself am running a Windows 10 Machine and using fire fox, chrome and Internet Explorer (all updated) as my main browsers. The last back up of data came from a Windows 8.1 device copied onto my western digital portable hard drive (their account folders). Also at the time of scanning internet was active and firewall on my other antivirus product was disabled.

Webroot version is ‘Webroot Secure Anywhere Antivirus 9.0.3.37 & has been updated.’

Also sorry if this is in the wrong part!

Hi lukey159

A very belated welcome to the Community Forums. APologies but it appears that you post drop between the cracks. :(

OK, lets have a go at answering your questions/issues:

Question 2: Now I've currently scanned my portable hard drive from a friends computer which was infected and Webroot has found zero threats with-in his data where as my other antivirus product has been throwing alerts and showing in its scan (ran at different times) that the hard drive currently has 4 + threats on it ranging from Trojans to PUA.

Well, WSA operates on a very different principle to most other security products in that it effectively ignores malware that is not active (given that inactive malware is not a threat...by definition) hence it could well be that the other product is picking up dormant malware and flagging it.

Also WSA does not pickup & report on cookies which a lot of other security products include to boost their detection figures, etc.

Finally, WSA does detect and remove many PUA's, and more are being added, but WSA does not detect all of them. A simple browser add-on with PUA behaviour that is easy to identify and easy to remove is not likely to be detected and removed by WSA. Those that are intentionally difficult to locate and remove are. Please see this link for more information regarding Webroot's stance on these annoying programs.

Question 2: On rare occasions when I’m searching google or Bing Webroot’s website ratings system just doesn’t show up at all?.

At present the Filtering Extension is in a state of flux with the Development Team rolling out enhancements to the feature. This is causing some sporadic issues which range from what you are describing to a slow down in browsing. This can also vary between browsers in use...I have seen what you are describing in Firefox and nothing at all like that in Chrome.

As I said the whole area is in a state of flux and therefore we will need to have some patience until the roll out is finished and what is currently in beta test withsome of us users is released to all users via the release channel. The good news is that even if yo are not warned about the site by the Filtering Extension WSA has you back and locks you down with the Block Page, etc., and after all that is the most important IMHO of the features that you need to be working in relation to browsing.

Well, I hope that the explanations are of assistance and convince you to have faith in WSA? But if not then feel free to ask further questions and we wil do our best to answer them for you.

Regards, Baldrick

Thank You for the welcome and that’s ok no problem :)

Sadly if WSA can't pick up malware  that’s dormant or at least in files / folders on my hard drive or others then it is simply no good to me personally.

Same as PUA which mostly infects the peoples computers that im repairing so i cant / wouldn’t recommend it either, It’s like WSA is behind the pack or late to the game.

Same goes for the Filtering Extension but I can't complain as much due to the fact it does block sites and or warns me.

As for tracking cookies I don’t mind  🙂 and haven’t seen them become a thing since way back + everyone uses other privacy tools to combat those.

To sum it up no after reading this and using WSA I won’t be buying a license or recommending it to friends sorry. Only thing I’m slightly happy with is the Filtering Extension.  I may come back in a few years when hopefully WSA is more mature or at least updated and ready for public properly.
