Should Win 10 Defender be running along side Webroot Secure Anywhere?

I noticed that Windows 10 Defender is running along side Webroot Secure Anywhere on my HP laptop. Should Defender be running? Will Defender compromise Webroot?

Most anti-virus apps, such as Avast and Norton, turn Defender off.

I think you may looking at it wrong. In the menu it shows on but believe me when i say it's off actually. Try and start the defender. Then you will get the message like " can't cause it's disabled or so"

Hello Jim492

Welcome to the Webroot Community,( Edited: Thanks ?  you beat me to the punch!;))

This is odd behavior for Windows Defender to be enabled with Webroot using Windows 10. Because Windows 10 will shut off WD if there is another AV running,

WSA will co-exist very nicely with Windows Defender (that is the way that WSA has been designed) WD will not compromise Webroot at the least.

Having said that WSA provides much, much better protection than Windows Defender and therefore there is no real point in running both. All that Windows Defender does is to add some drag to your system' s resources.

Hope this helps?

Thank you for the helpful response.

I have just now checked Defender: Real time protection is ON and protecting my PC. And Microsoft is sending me definition updates.
Webroot Secure Anywhere: it too is ON and protecting my PC. The big green checkmark is prominately displayed, assuming it goes away if I turn WSA OFF.

Sherry, I just received a notification that a security setting had changed. Defender is now OFF, settings are grayed out. Did WSA just discover Defender was up and running and decide to turn it OFF? Curious to say the least.

Hi Jim492,

No Webroot does not turn off WD. Microsoft Windows turns WD off when Window 10 discovers that there is already a AV installed. That's just how it is with Microsoft now in Windows 10. Webroot can easily run along side another AV.  So it's not a WR issue. It's Microsoft. If Webroot wasn't installed then WD would come back on.

IMO you really don't need WD because of added resources to the OS. But if you want both then that's entirely up to you. That's why I gave you that KB Articcle in my last post.

Hope this helps?

Hi, Sherry. Early yesterday (prior to my original post) Microsoft downloaded to my PC and installed the Win 10 1151 upgrade. It seems you are correct and it took Win 10 a bit to recognize that two anti-malware apps were enabled and to disable Defender.

Thanks again for your assistance, Sherry.
