Why is it that Windows Defender successfully finds and removes malware when WebRoot fails to do so?

I run WebRoot "SecureAnywhere" on my Windows workstation and it scans my device daily.

Twice now, WebRoot has reported:

  • Threats removed 0
  • Active threats 0

However, when I've subsequently run a full scan with Windows Defender, this tool [defender] has successfully detected and removed a trojan.

This is an abysmal failure on the part of WebRoot. What exactly have I paid for?!?

Hi donnmo

Welcome to the Community Forums.

I have to say that I would very much doubt what yo are reporting and only because Microsoft themselves advise that Windows Defender is only a basic solution and in fact if they detect that you have installed another security app on an installation only protected by Windows Defender Windows actually will turn Windows Defender off and cede protection to the 3rd party security application.

I am actually wondewring if what Windows Defender has detected is not a trojan but rather a PUA or Potentially Unwanted Application which are very annoying at best in that they cause pop-ups, redirect your browser home page, and other behaviour that may slow down the computer and direct ads your way, but they are not actually doing anything bad like damaging files or stealing information.

Would yo ube kind enough to post back with the details of what Windows Defender is reporting, most specifically the name of designation of the file in question as that will assist us in determining whether you are indeed correct or if it is a case of a PUA.

Many thanks in anticipation.

Regards, Baldrick
