On shutdown, Mac freezes & tells me I need to shutdown and restart. Only allows holding power switch

When I get ready to shutdown my Mac, my screen sometimes freezes and I get a message in a black box and a s=dimmed screen that says "You need to shutdown and restart your computer," or something to that effect. I can only do so by holding down the power button until the computer shuts off; it won't let me go through the regular shutdown process. When I turn my  Mac back on, Iget a message that says "Your computer was restarted because of an error." I have referred this to Apple and it appears to be a problem in my Webroot software. I don't know how to correct this issue. I haven't tried reinstalling yet.

BTW, my MacBook Pro is nearly ten years old and cannot be upgraded past Lion (10.7.5). I can't afford a more recent model, so I'm stuck with this one for now. This particular version of Webroot is the only thing I've found that is ompatible with this operating system.
