A team of researchers from French company P1 Security has detailed a long list of issues with the 4G VoLTE telephony, a protocol that has become quite popular all over the world in recent years and is currently in use in the US, Asia, and most European countries.

VoLTE stands for Voice Over LTE — where LTE stands for Long-Term Evolution and is a high-speed wireless communication for mobile phones and data terminals, based on older GSM technology.

In simpler terms, VoLTE is a mash-up between LTE, GSM, and VoIP, a technology used for Voice-over-the-Internet communications. The protocol rolled out in 2012 in South Korea and Singapore and has become very popular because it blends the benefits of old circuit-switched protocols (stability) with the benefits of modern IP protocols (call quality & speed).

Hey Jeff,

Wouldn't this cause more criminals to become intrigued by this announcement and jump on the bandwagon. (sorry, American slang) not sure what the UK reference is?? I guess I should say it could allow more tech savvy criminals to join in the free ride. O course, they would have to be very tech savvy as I hardly understood the article. :(

Thanks for all of you timely announcements. They are very informative. 🙂

No, Theresa...I do not think that is very likely or would be seen as very desirable by the miscreants. If they are going to they would hardly do so on the basis of this annoucement.

IMHO if they were looking to expoloit this then they would do so having identified it as a potential vector before the annoucement.

Regards, Baldrick

Allright. Color me naive then. It was just a thought. I probably watch too much TV where they always show copy cat criminals and they attribute it to the media realeasing information.

I guess I need to get back to the real world where Webroot lives.

Thanks for the reality check!

Nah, you are not naive for expressing a real life concern. Better to consider the negative and take dispositions (within reason) then assuming that all is rosy & safe (as many do...to their cost). ;)

Voicemail hacking? Discovered in 2015, and still not fixed.
And that's not the worst of it

14 Jun 2017 at 02:58, Richard Chirgwin Voice over LTE leaks like a sieve, because nobody's paying attention to the details.

That's the conclusion in a paper (PDF) presented to the Symposium on Information and Communications Technology Security in Rennes, France last week.

The researchers, from Priority 1 Security, warn the vulnerabilities could affect any of the hundred-plus operators using VoLTE worldwide.

VoLTE is the technology that back-ports voice calls onto the IP data-centric 4G standards via the IP Media Subsystem (IMS). Without it, phones need the ability to fall back to 3G standards to place calls. Phones use the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) for call signalling, with the Session Description Protocol (SDP) to let the callee know what type of call (for example voice or video) is requested.

While I do try to keep abreast of all of the "new" technology, it remains a cat and mouse game for me. Just when I think I have a handle on today's trendy gadgets, tomorrow they are obsolete. Once I realized that I could never "know it all", I threw in the towel. I still have a landline. I do not own a smartphone or even understand what makes them "smart". I do not own a television. I watch TV on my PC using Windows Media Center--a wonderful program for me. I do not own a stereo (oh oh am I dating myself?). I listen to music that I downloaded on my PC from CD's that I purchased. Also using WMC. The only cell phone that I have is called a "burn phone". And please don't ask me why it is called that. I wake up in the morning from the sun (that's right, that big yellow thing in the sky). I go to sleep when that big yellow thing disappears in the evening (and don't ask me where it goes). I still own an answering machine that works when I am not home. Oops, was that a give away?? Thieves, beware, I have an attack Chihuahua who is tougher than you!! I shift gears in my automatic transmission automobile just so I don't forget how. I read the newsPAPER, not the online version. That just doesn't feel the same as the real thing. I keep a paper calendar and address book just because I can. You are probably terribly bored and that's ok with me. At least it's something that I can still understand. If one more person replies "seriously" I just might scream. What exactly does "seriously" indicate these days?? Ok, that's a wrap since my fingers and my eyes are tired. Enjoy your day and/or evening and thank your lucky stars that you are not me.

Oh, did I mention that I truly enjoy this Webroot community? I may be old fashioned but I bet there are some things about antivirus software that I know and you don't. Until the next time,
Theresa

PS Nothing about this was relative to my friend Baldrick. I just happened to reply on this post. It seemed appropriate.

And none was taken as "relative to my friend Baldrick", at least not by little me...;).;);):D

I read this fondly, @. Especially about "never being able to know it all". I have to remember this.
It's important to stay humble!!!

Hello JP,

My name is Theresa. Pleased to make your acquaintence. I find it interesting how one person's reality (mine) is another person's nostalgia (yours). I do not really know many people in this forum so I though it would be appropriate to post an abridged bio. It was given no thought. I sat at my keyboard and the fingers flew fast and furious. I felt like Andy Rooney (retired reporter from 60 Minutes) who had a lot to say about the silliest of topics.

Thank you for the feedback. It was unexpected. I, too, strive to remain humble. Some days I fail but other days I don't so it evens out.

Again, it was very kind of you to post the comment. I justly feel acknowledged which is all a girl can ask for.

All my best,
Theresa

Summer's Greetings, Theresa.

?

I'm so glad that you didn't take it the wrong way and instead took it as a positive acknowledgment! Really, I know we're all at different parts of this crazy technological Journey, and at times it can be so incredibly overwhelming. I still find most of my Peace in Life in the simple things: a beautiful sunset, getting out into Mother Nature, conversations with friends that go late into the night, things that you can't buy with any amount of money.

I can absolutely see you channeling Andy Rooney as your fingers typed their merry little story. I'd love to see more of that on here!

Keep Smiling,

Josh P.
