As organizations move to fully embrace cloud, the significant benefits of running IT infrastructure via cloud services are becoming even more evident. Not only do cloud-based services come at a far lower cost than physical platforms and deployments, IT leaders are also able to side-step much of the risk and 'heavy lifting' around tech investment and maintenance by moving this out of local data centers. They can also enjoy expert third-party systems management and reliable service delivery, without having to give up much of the control for end users.

Microsoft 365 is a great case in point. The procurement model for this ever-expanding suite of high-quality IT services is based around a price per user. It is easily scalable as teams and organizations grow and can therefore help to optimise budgets, avoiding payment for infrastructure that may go unused. It’s also growing, with new features and functionality added every day that will keep IT departments at the cutting edge of optimal business processes.

This one I am really pationate about having seen and had to deal with some horror stories. All you eggs in one basket has never been a good idea. Back to the early Exchange days (well mid 00’s) we implemented 3rd party application to backup and retain emails (MailStore). Now most data has moved from physical \ VM Servers to OneDrive and SharePoint it requires a backup of that data. You would have laughed at anyone not backing up the data on servers so what is different now. There are lots of new players to this Market and I have seen a few. Does anyone have any recommendations of who they use?

Agree 100%. We use Barracuda for email scanning and Datto for SaaS backups. There are a lot of other options out there. Spread those eggs out!

Datto Saas protection is our product/service of choice. We reviewed Acronis but it is not comparable from a cost nor service perspective. Microsoft security products like ATP/Defender are a must have complimentary service to this too.

As mentioned above, SaaS protection is what we use. Interestingly Datto don’t charge you for multiple Sharepoint sites either. You only need one license to back up each Sharepoint customer. I know Acronis charge per site. Hope that helps.

This article is a perfect explanation of why backup is critical even on cloud services. To answer @deanosborne question we use Barracuda for filtering as well as cloud to cloud backup. Overall happy with their offering though the recommendations of Datto are rock solid. Used them at my previous company and had no complaints.

Glad to hear Datto mentioned lots here as that’s our preference too.

we have clients who have opted for the whole Microsoft option and you can understand why from a convenience factor. But that’s the same as using the same password everywhere!
