Iowa school district suffers outages after cyberattack

The largest school district in Iowa, Des Moines Public Schools, cancelled classes this week after falling victim to a cyberattack. Officials for the district confirmed that many of their internal systems were taken offline shortly after discovering unauthorized activity on the network, which would make daily operations exceedingly difficult for both staff and students. If this attack is confirmed to be ransomware, it would be the fourth Iowa school district targeted in the last year.

DDoS attacks strike several Danish banks

Early this week, seven private banks and the Danish central bank all fell victim to a series of DDoS attacks, which caused significant disruptions to their online financial operations. Cyberattacks against financial institutions have become increasingly popular by threat actors, as their security has repeatedly proven to be lacking against more complex attacks. Fortunately, once the attacks ceased, all the banks’ websites returned to normal functionality.

Data breach impacts Air France-KLM loyalty program

Officials for Air France-KLM have begun contacting customers that belong to their loyalty program, Flying Blue, about a data breach that has compromised all stored account information. All Flying Blue accounts have been locked, to prevent any fraudulent actions being taken, and customers are required to reset their passwords to re-gain access to their accounts. Luckily for customers, Flying Blue doesn’t retain any financial or payment card data.

Cyberattack forces Royal Mail international services to pause

The UK’s Royal Mail delivery service was forced to temporarily stop their international shipping services after identifying a malicious attack on their computer systems. While all domestic shipping has been unaffected by this incident, Royal Mail staff have confirmed that all export services will be delayed by several days. The Royal Mail has been plagued with service outages in the past few months, with disruptions to multiple online applications that have caused additional strain on the already struggling delivery systems in the UK.

Confidential San Francisco transit police files leaked

A collection of 120,000 highly sensitive files have been leaked by a threat group, who claim to have exploited a vulnerability in the San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit System (BART) Police Department. Officials for the department claim to have found no signs of intrusion to their systems. In addition to the numerous victim case files that were leaked, hiring information of contractors and potential officers for BART was also affected by the data breach and could lead to further identity or credit attacks.

Another DDOS attack on a bank… and yet they are still trying to push the whole world to be cashless (for us plebs anyway) and say that we should feel secure about it all… I think not...

Really frustrating to see continued attacks on public schools. Sucks when kids are directly harmed by the inaction of those meant to protect them.

Can’t say I am surprised given the lack of funding most public school systems are faced with. They don’t pay enough to attract quality IT staff. Heck, many of them barely pay enough to attract enough teachers and staff.
