Recently, one of the National Data Centers in Indonesia fell victim to a cyberattack that encrypted many government servers and caused outages for several immigration, passport, and other online services. The threat group claiming responsibility for the attack is the Brain Cipher ransomware group, which has only been active for the last month or so but has been targeting organizations around the globe and uses a variant of LockBit 3.0 for the encryptor. Brain Cipher employs a double-extortion tactic by exfiltrating compromised data before executing their encryptor and leveraging the stolen data for ransom on their new leak site.
Interpol operation takes down global scam network
In the latest iteration of the international law enforcement campaign, Operation First Light 2024, police agencies from 61 countries have coordinated to track down and arrest almost 4,000 individuals with direct ties to online scam networks. Alongside the arrests, Interpol officials froze 6,745 bank accounts with a combined asset value of $275 million, mostly generated from online scam sites, phishing campaigns, and fake shopping sites. Operation First Light has been an ongoing international cooperation campaign since 2014 and has focused exclusively on shutting down and dismantling the ever-growing online fraud market.
Pennsylvania hospital suffers ransomware attack
At the end of June, officials for Wayne Memorial Hospital in Pennsylvania confirmed that their network was compromised by a ransomware attack and resulted in a data breach. The threat actors behind the attack, Monti ransomware gang, have since added Wayne Memorial Hospital to their leak site and have given the victim until July 8th to pay the demanded ransom before the data is made publicly available.
Data breach impacts millions of Agropur customers
One of the largest dairy firms in North America, Agropur, has recently begun notifying their large customer base of a data breach that occurred towards the end of June. It is believed that several shared online directories were compromised during a cyberattack, though the investigation into this security incident is still ongoing. Staff from Agropur have confirmed that no financial information was exposed, but they are still working to determine the overall extent of the intrusion.
Evil Twin Wi-Fi scammer arrested in Australia
Following an investigation in April of airline employees noticing unusual Wi-Fi networks on airplanes and in airports, the Australian Federal Police have arrested one individual for creating fake Wi-Fi networks to steal login credentials. The alleged suspect is facing nine charges related to cybercrime fraud after authorities found login credentials for dozens of individuals on his portable devices and was spotted transporting a wireless access device in his luggage.
