In Windows 10 I keep getting notifications for "updates". However these updates will not install.

I downloaded Windows 10. Now I get notifications to download "updates". However these updates will never install or go away.
"Update and restart later". "Update and restart". After going through the motions I get: "Undoing changes - cannot update".
So I can never turn my computer off as "Updates are available" ,  never go away. I let the battery run down to turn off without wasting time with the updates. I hope my description makes sense.
