Celebrating International Women's Day

Celebrating International Women's Day
Forum|alt.badge.img+20

March 8th is International Women’s Day!

We here at Webroot want to take this opportunity celebrate the strength, intelligence, and diversity of the women in our lives and across the world. In the world of cybersecurity, there are so many influential women that have made their mark and evolved this industry over the years. While I’d love to call out each and every single one of them, today I’m going to focus on one in particular: Joanna Rutkowska.

Born in 1981, Joanna is a Polish computer security researcher. She is most famous for her research in stealth malware and her development of Qubes OS - A security/privacy focused operating system. Joanna has also become well-known in white-hat hacking circles for exposing vulnerabilities in Windows Vista.

The development of Qubes OS is a particularly amazing achievement in her repertoire. An open-source, linux-based operating system, Qubes uses an interesting method to achieve a high level of privacy and security called “security by compartmentalization”.  It uses domains deployed as lightweight virtual machines to isolate the important processes within the OS. With these compartments operating as separate virtual machines, it is incredibly difficult for a hacker or government-run spy agency to access key information or inject malware into the machine. Qubes OS is truly an evolutionary software for individuals rightfully seeking to keep their information and data as secure as possible.

Joanna has presented at high-level security conferences such as Chaos Communication Congress, Black Hat Briefings, RSA conference, and the Gartner IT Security Summit. She will likely continue making great strides in the world of security and will certainly go down in the history books as a highly influential woman in Cybersecurity.

Now, I want to hear from all of you! Please share any stories about an influential woman in your life, be they friends, colleagues, or family members. Do you know any women that are doing super cool things in IT or Cybersecurity? This is your chance to give them the recognition that they deserve!

I’m so excited to hear some of your stories - thanks for stopping in and celebrating women with us today!

I would like to thank all the women in my life from my Mother to my Wife and to all the Women around the world!

Imagine a gender equal world. A world free of bias, stereotypes and discrimination. A world that's diverse, equitable, and inclusive. A world where difference is valued and celebrated. Together we can forge women's equality. Collectively we can all #BreakTheBias.

Celebrate women's achievement. Raise awareness against bias. Take action for equality.

Do something good for your wife today. I am. I’m going to a quilting class with my wife today at 3 PM. That should be a joy since I don’t know the first thing about quilting. Just going to keep her company. I hope I make it through to the end of the class. ROFL

Mothers day in the UK is later in the year, but the missus held down a job and everything with 2 kids on her own and she’s pretty inspiring. Definitely taught me to love life again.

Make sure to take time out to spend with those you love in life. My other half and I always make sure to take time out for date night at least weekly.

Most influential woman I know of would have to be Rosa Parks! Standing up for what she believed in and making a huge difference to society in the US back in the 50s when she refused to get up on a bus for a white passenger. This triggered huge changes, and her work helped fight against discrimination.

I dont really have an example of an influential women I have met or dealt with directly in cybersecurity, but I have certainly come across many women who are as good or better than their male counterparts in their job role.

There does seem to be some bias still but it is good to see that more and more women are being accepted into those important roles that were only taken by men.

In fact, my wife earns more than me and is the chief income earner in our household. She is a Digital Manager and works very hard. I don’t see it as a weekness that as a male I earn less than her and I know others where the women is the parent that brings home the bacon!

I made breakfast in bed for my wife this morning, mother of my two wonder children. I couldn’t imagine this world without her.

Going to make her lunch now too!

Partner, mother of 3, Domestic engineer, organiser of chaos! She does holds up magnificently against incredible odds! :) Wouldn’t be without her :)

My mother and my grandmother are the two strongest women I know. I’d be lucky to be half the woman they are one day.

The fact of the matter is, where would be without the women in our lives? Mine has saved my life twice and for that I will always be grateful.

I think we would be lost without them and the sooner we get to the point where equality is no longer an issue the better. They seem to have been undervalued and underappreciated for too long in the work environment and hopefully with more awareness now all that is coming to an end.

Here’s to a future for our industry where diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging are enjoyed by all. #BreakTheBias

I am thankful for my wife. She's strong, and has brought me through a lot of times. She's my rock and the one I lean on for everything.

There are many admirable women in my life. One who comes to mind is a friend whom I have had since childhood. She is an amazing person all around and has a very demanding job, which she is amazing at. She and her husband just finished remodeling their newly purchased home and they both did so much of the work themselves. Now she is undergoing treatment for ovarian cancer. She has always been the type of person I look up to because she has a positive outlook on life and is kind to everyone she meets. We need more people like her in the world. Missy, you’re a rockstar!

It is a sad state that many men out there, still look down on ladies. NO men I have ever met will look don on their mom, why look down then on any other lady? Whether it is your wife, your daughter, or your colleague at work? I believe that women are our equals, and standing at our side, not below us. YES, there are a lot of religious aspects etc that can be thrown at this topic, but for every reason you can say women are not a mans equal, you can bring the context from the very same religious books that will show you that a woman is your equal. If men leave their pride and stubbornness, and harness the fact that woman are our equals. The whole world will be a way better place. I had an absolutely amazing mom, am blessed with a super awesome wife, and the most amazing daughters I love and cherish. Lets all do our part to leave this false pride that we as men have, and start treating woman with the respect and equality they deserve.

I once had a very skilled female collegue who was visiting a customer with a male account manager for a technical briefing about a newly started project. The customer kept talking to the man instead of to the woman. Very embarassing. #breakthebias

International Women's Day is not something I bother with. I treat every day the same regarding women, and people in general, with the respect that they deserve. Women have some of the hardest work to do in life, emotionally as well as physically, and we as men just don’t have the same ways of dealing with it, but, some should do a lot more to respect it.

Had a hard day on the job? Try a morning keeping screaming kids fed and entertained, 7 days a week… 24/7 - that’s real hard work.

Now the pressure from certain organisations is on to disregard the term WOMAN… and its good to see that the term is being told to take a hike by the people these organisations are trying to cancel.

I dream of a time when women's day will no longer exist, because it will mean that finally there will no longer be gender differences.

So why just one day a year? I know some amazing women, and I celebrate them every day. I suggest not waiting for some special day to be great full for the women in your life. I would love to see this day NOT be celebrated actually. If we had gender equality we would it need this “special” day.

Thanks for the article just the same

I started at school in 1991 with 2 female students in a class of 24.

Still it looks like there are more male colleague then female.

That said I would love to see more women in IT and other business. Most of the time they do have a different view on things, That’s always a good thing.
