I first heard the Gerard Hoffnung version as a teenager in 1964/1965. The (classical) music lovers among us at my school were completely enamoured of Gerard Hoffnung. But his masterpiece always remained for me his The Bricklayer's Lament and I was so glad to find it again on YouTube.
