Hi Folks

After several days of searching the internet and failing can anyone identify this tool please.

The secateurs are just there for scale, and I can give no more info than what can be seen there, other than the bottom of the green part will move away from the metal spike by about 2cm, sorry.

It could honestly be anything @TripleHelix, someone suggested a dandelion weeder which I doubt very much, someone else suggested something to with fishing nets, so who knows?

There’s a hole on the other side maybe to plant seeds? But looks kinda deep for seeds… Plus it looks like it has a stopper on each side to tell you when your at a certain depth and not to go further? Like you said it opens about 2cm so the seed can drop in to the bottom but like I said it’s kinda deep for a seed…

My Guess.

Maybe a Sky Hook?

What is a sky hook used for?

A skyhook is a "hook" used to lift an object on a long cable hanging from the sky, without readily apparent support. In the mid-20th century it was common in the Boy Scouts and occupations such as oil drilling to send new recruits on a futile search for such an imaginary object, as a practical joke.

I cannot imagine it is for seed sowing, I know I would not go to all that trouble of getting this tool to sow a few seeds.
I wish I could post more info but this comes from a facebook group of Head Gardeners I am a member of and the fact that few have responded says to me that it is not to do with gardening but I do feel like I should know the answer.
A sky hook, I am not too sure. The handle on it says to me a small hand tool.

Now Jeff you really got me wondering what this tool is. I’m going to print a picture of it and when I go to Lowe's, Home Depot or any of the hardware stores around here, I’ll show them the picture and ask if they know what it is. Some old geezer at the store might know. LOL

Thank you @ProTruckDriver. I am just totally stumped, I thought that doing an image search would give some clue but just nothing.

@Jasper_The_Rasper are there any words or numbers stamped on the mysterious tool?

@TripleHelix  is there a pic more specific

@ProTruckDriver the only writing I can see is Bul?b and maybe planter BUT I think and strongly suspect that is a very wild guess.
I just do not know what the the tool is for.
When I did an image search I did wonder about something a rugmaking tool but nothing definite.

I still have no real idea what this is but I do have an idea.
This pic you enhanced @TripleHelix , those 2 stoppers! you mention, If they are merely for you to grip with your fingers it could make sense.
That hole could be to attach maybe a seed hopper!

The result could be, you push the tool into the ground, PULL up on the 2 stoppers (I will call them that now), that would mean that in the slot at the top the pin would be guided down while green piece slid up e seed causing the gap at the bottom between spike and green piece to widen allowing a large to drop into the prepared hole.

Just a thought, but is it practical?

Okay but why not use the handle to pull out after dropping the seed or seeds? To me you use the handle to push in the ground and the stoppers stop at the right depth then to spread it open for the 2cm gap then drop the seed or seeds then pull it out? Lets assume the ground is soft and not hard soil.

Yes it could be, I can thinking of nothing else for it. I know I would not bother with one though.

Me either, but how about many, many seeds? I still wouldn't use it. 🤔

If I used it to sow many seeds I would not even consider it. A quick groove in the ground, trickle some seeds in, recover and job done. IF this is a seed sower, I can only imaging it for bigger seeds which have to be sown singly.

It’s the only thing that I think it would be used for. So I guess there’s not many of them as it wouldn’t be for everyone.

It would be useful for something with mobility issues and unable to bend down so far I suppose, but I will just assume unless I hear different that it is soled now.

Hi @franco thank you for replying.
No the tool is not hollow, I wish it was it would have been a lot easier to answer.

I did a detailed  image search and the results are humorous at best. Google even suggested it was a dip stick for a Ford truck. 😳 A bulb planter was the closest I could find, but I’m not sure that’s it because the bottom is different.

Now I’m curious too.

Hey Jeff, Is that the only position this mystery tool has? Does the green attachment move in anyway? If it does take some close up pics if there is different positions of the green attachment.

Thank you @MajorHavoc  and @ProTruckDriver
It is not a bulb planter of that I am certain.

The only info I can give is that the bottom end of the green part will move away from the spike by about 2 cm.
If I could hazard a guess, if you hold it by the handle and place your fingers or thumb at the top of the green part and push, I would expect it to move down and pivot on those protruding lugs which brings the bottom part out by 2 cm

I still say it’s plant small to medium seeds as it opens up 2cm and the 2 stoppers controls the depth. The hole on the back is not large enough to plant Bulbs and like I said above I wouldn’t be using it to sow seeds but I think that’s what’s it for.
