Hurricane Dorian packing more punch on way to U.S. mainland -- live updates

Full Article

This hurricane is forecast to hit Florida as a Major Cat 3. Hurricanes are unpredictable and our weather forecasters here in Virginia say the we are not out of the woods yet with Dorian. The Gulf Stream could pick up Dorian and raise havoc on the whole East Coast Shore Line from Florida to Virginia. We have our Hurricane Supplies ready because I have a feeling there are more hurricanes to come this year due to the very warm water in the Atlantic Ocean.

How much impact did the previous hurricanes have earlier this year and last year? I have family in Norfolk but they didn't say much about it, so I'm curious.

We had little wind but a lot of rain. I've lived in this area for over 40 years and I have never seen it rain so often as in the past 2 years. I live in Chesapeake, no flood zone but Norfolk always gets flooded out when we have heavy rain. This is some of the after effects of Hurricane Matthew in Norfolk:

Forecasters here are now saying Florida is the Bulls Eye for Hurricane Dorian hitting as a Cat 4 Hurricane (130 MPH Sustained Winds) with higher gusts. Thoughts and Prayers for the people of Florida.

The best of luck to all who may be caught up with it.

The water temperature in the Atlantic is 86+ degrees. That's more fuel for the hurricane. No land in the way to break up the hurricane before hitting Florida. We maybe looking at another Hurricane Katrina

Geeze I hope this nasty one doesn't hit you guys. Sounds scary though that it is going to hit the Coast line... Hope the weathermen are wrong!

My son who is a non-working Foreman/Lineman is leaving in the morning with all their trucks heading to Florida.. Going on storm makes me nervous but they know what they are doing. It'll take them 3 days to get there because their trucks can only go 50-55 mph. 🙄

Stay safe Dave!

Like I posted in my first post, it looks like the Gulf Stream will pickup Hurricane Dorian and maybe keep it at sea. If so we are now in the Cone of the path of Dorian. That means high winds and a lot of rain again. Then again it all depends where or if it makes landfall. Forecasters here are saying Dorian might be another Hurricane Matthew here in the Tidewater Virginia area. We are keeping a close eye on it to where it's heading.

Hopefully this hurricane will make a hard right turn to the North and will stay out to sea. That way all of the East Coast will dodge the bullet. We are still in the cone of the path of Dorian but hopefully by the time it makes the Virginia Coast it will lose its punch as shown below. (We live approx. at the arrow.)

I don't believe we will evacuate with this hurricane by the way it looks by the time it gets to the Virginia boarder. There is a lot we have to look at in a hurricane before evacuation. Cat 1 or Cat 2 we will usually stay home until it passes. Then again if it's a Cat 2, which side of the eye are we going to be on when it passes. If we are on the West side of the eye (less wind) we will stay, if on the East side of the eye (heavy wind) we may evacuate.
The way this hurricane is tracking and the forecast of the wind speed I believe we will be okay. We are keeping an eye on the local weather channels.

Navy Ships in Virginia are order to go to Sea:

Now is the time I wish I were still in the Navy. I loved ridding those hurricanes out on the navy ships. Over one wave and in through two waves. 30 to 40 foot seas, loved it! 🤣

I loved seeing those ships in the Navy when my ex-husband was stationed in San Diego. I would get to go on the "Marvin Shields" when it was stationed there.

Sounds fun Dave, riding those hurricanes!😊

The wind is going to start picking up tomorrow (Thursday) evening with gusty winds. All day Friday heavy winds and they are calling for about 7+ inches of rain with some flooding. We have a Doctors appointment tomorrow afternoon before the hurricane passes which should be no problem. Schools are closed tomorrow and Friday. I'll try to stay online, hopefully we don't lose power. One thing good, the brunt of the storm will be during daylight Friday so I can get a good nights sleep Thursday night with my CPAP not worrying about a power loss. ☺️
