DO I NEED A VPN?

Best answer by cpmadave

Hi, Baldrick,
That's the response I was hoping for. It should help reduce my paranoid-ness from a 10 to an 8 or even (maybe) a 7.

Hi cpmadave

No, strictly speaking you do not unless you want anonymity. If you care about your anonymity, you should go for a paid VPN service.  There is a lot of tracking, and that is where the VPN would score; to avoid any sort of tracking. Plus also because the tunneling is point to point there is no chance of being hacked.

But in all fairness for most people it is complete overkill unless you know that you connection is at risk or you have something you want to keep super secret. In most cases the protection that WSA offers is sufficient.

Where a VPN really comes into its own is when you are logging into the Internet from a public location; perhaps via WiFi in McDonalds or the like...in that case a VPN is definitively required to keep things secret/confidential.

Hope that helps?

Regards, Baldrick
