Sudden High CPU consumption 38%since clicking Allow Webroot to make changes on computer Help please?

High CPU consumption since Allowing Webroot to make changes...

Laptop running win10 - got a MS window pop up asking if I want to allow this app to make changes on this computer. Below in the field read:
Program: Webroot Secure Anywhere
Verified Publisher: Webroot INC
File Origin: Hard Drive on this computer
Program Location: C:program FileWebrootwrsa.exe-IS

Checked Verified Publisher detail - everything appeared legitimate.

Did I mess up clicking "allow?"
Should I have chosen "cancel?"

Ever since CPU usage by WSA is 33% to 38%, HD is whirring loudly non-stop and computer running hot.

Could use some help fixing this problem. Thanks

Hi JackW2050

No don't worry about the MS update that was mentioned in that post by stevecosta.

The lastest Webfilter was suppose to fix this UAC popup with the Webfilter that Daniel has stated: Webfilter v1.2.0.27.

Please follow the uninstal/reinstall that TripleHelix has posted for you. This should fix all issues that you are having. Try the reinstall and let us know how you are doing!

Thanks!

Hello JackW2050

Welcome to the Webroot Community,

We have been hearing about this issue for about a week. Would you please go to this Thread where their is a reported fix by the Webroot Support Team by ?. (It's the 12th post)

Yes please allow this to startup. (UAC)

Then get back to us if you continue to see high consumption. You might need a uninstall/clean install of Webroot. Let me know if you want to do this. For I can give you exact instructions to reinstall Webroot. Which only takes minutes to do.

Hope this helps?

HI Sherry, thank you for your prompt reply. I clicked on the @aieie and counted down 12 posts and viewed the post which was regarding a free version for a phone. I believe I'm not finding the post you're speaking of?

Please advise. And it may be the simplier solution is to uninstall/clean install of Webroot and I'm not opposed to doing this.

For future reference, should I get the MS popup again, should I click cancel or allow?

Forgive me, I used to be much more tech savvy then I blinked and got passed up. LOL

I look forward to your response finding the correct post and / or possibly your exact instructions to reinstall Webroot.

Thank you,
Jack

Yes I agree do a clean reinstall!

Please follow the steps closely!

  • Make sure you have a copy of your 20 Character Alphanumeric Keycode! Example: SA69-AAAA-A783-DE78-XXXX
  • KEEP the computer online for Uninstall and Reinstall to make sure it works correctly
  • Download a Copy Here (Best Buy Subscription PC users click HERE)
  • Uninstall WSA and Reboot
  • Install with the new installer, enter your Keycode and don't import any settings if asked to as you can set it up as you like once it's done
  • Let it finish it's install scan
  • Reboot once again
Please let us know if that resolves your issue?

Thanks,

Daniel 😉

Thanks Sherry, I found the thread. I noted a post by stevecosta who posted: Just downloaded windows update KB 3035583 dated 17th Dec 2015 and this has resolved the problem

Should I try this as a first step?

A couple post below stevecosta's Daniel posted: Well it was the WSA Web Filter that was the cause and Webroot released a new one on Wednesday v1.2.0.27 which also fixed the UAC issue.

I'm not sure what Daniel is referencing with v1.2.0.27 - is this something that I need to download? And if yes, where?

If you think the windows update KB 3035583 is the answer then I'll give it a shot and report what happens.

Thanks,
Jack

Hi Daniel, thanks for your post. So, you believe a clean uninstall reinstall is necessary to remedy the problem?

Thanks
Jack

SUCCESS! Thanks to Sherry and Daniel this remedied all issues.

Although, WSA did not want to be uninstalled, first attempt got an error so I rebooted and tried again, which did the trick. Uninstalled successfully. Rebooted and installed, rebooted and my laptop is back to normal. Start up is normal as well as no more HD spinning up. It's running nice and cool again.

If anyone else experiences the same problem I would recommend this solution. It works!

Thanks for all your help Sherry and Daniel. Much appreciated.

Jack

I'm pretty sure it's not solved if you start your PC not connected to the internet (pretty common, let's say, for a laptop while on travel).

I just ended a remote session with Webroot support and the UAC (with crashes and high CPU) is still a problem if you are offline

Basically last update broke Webroot offline mode, involving somehow UAC, and I strongly doubt that it can be solved till Webroot reproduces it in their labs (being an offline problem it'd be pretty hard to do it with a remote session, LOL)

No step like clean reinstall, done by me and by support during the session (with WRDATA being cancelled and reboot before reinstall) is able to solve the offline problem.

Sorry for the bad news, let's hope they can find a solution soon

I am sure they do not have it solved.  I have another post where I stated Webroot kept shutting itself off and then I kept getting a microsoft message asking if I wanted to let Webroot change my computer. I always clicked yes but webroot very seldom worked.
I was told to go to support because other people were having the same problems.  I went to support, they gave a detailed description on how to shut down Webroot, change the data to data1, reload, etc.   I had a lot of problems trying to change the data to data1, it said it was in use and could not be changed.  After fiddling with it for a hour or so finally figured out if you still had the shortcut icon on your desktop (even though webroot was removed) it would not let you change the data to data1.  Finally got it changed.  Reloaded webroot as was explained in the procedure.
What a differance that made, now I still get the microsoft message asking if I want to let webroot change my computer plus I get super high CPU usage (which I did not have before) which locks up my computer up making it useless.
Needless to say I am running Windows Defender at the moment.  It works with no problems.  I have used webroot for years but am a little frustrated with them at the moment.

Well, I have no idea whether the issue is thoroughly solved or not because I only use my laptop at home and I'm always connected during boot up. So far, since I clean and reinstalled, zero issues. Computer is behaving as it did before I upgraded to Windows 10 free version from Windows 8.1.

WSA CPU usage is back to what it was being 0 to .2%. What can I say, I'm happy.
