Is the internet making kids stupid??

Thanks mac353 for the interesting post. Situation is really alarming. I have to admit that I had hard times with my daughter when she was in the teenage age. I couldn't get her from the computer which often got me mad. However the situation has  changed as the years went by. Now she is 20 and I think she has got it more less balanced. So yes, surely she is still Facebooking but also going to a gym and so on and enjoying her life more meaningfully, thanks God.

@ pegas That's always a good thing. That means you and your wife did a good job. Myself, I don't think it's making them stupid but more lazy than anything. Kids these days don't get outside enough anymore, or so it seems.

My family is in the minority: my kids are age 12, 8 and 5 and NONE of them have their own phone.  The time will be coming soon in which the 12 year old demands it, but we have held out so far.
 
As for internet use, they are allowed to use the computer, but we monitor what they do and social networking sites are not allowed.  I can see that the oldest (who has minor Autism) will be allowed some social networking in the near future, but probably not yet quite yet.  He does have an Ipod that is internet connected, and he does use that to text to his friends.  We are OK with that as he is not able to be located by those who do not know him.
 
 

@ Davd, you and your wife are really doing good then, thats awesom. Kids these days can be demanding so if their not hounding you, your doing somethig right. Great to hear.

Very interesting topic. Well to start with my kids are adults.....................All 3 have their hand helds and of course are constantly texing or on the net. All 3 are sharp as a whip................. They rather text than call us on the phone. Now I have a grandchildren and they all have ipods............or laptops..............They do spend a lot of time  with their computers......but stupid  NO  they are very smart with these computers and out shine me:D....  The web is a unlimited source of knowledge when used in the proper way............So they have the means at their finger tips to obtain answers to their questions.

The statement is greatly exaggerated. The internet is making kids anything but stupid. The excessive use of the internet among youngsters has a negative impact to some extent. I think one solution and a major one could be cutting down on the use of social media. This alone would make a huge difference.
