Switching to Win 8

I have decided to move on from Win 7 to Win 8 (acquired a license when it came out)...last time I came back to 7 but it's time to try again. If my avatar changes from a rooster to a buzzard, you'll know why! Here goes Daniel.......

Hi RR

I think that you will like Win8.1...I was sceptical but I now have one system running it and it is kind of cool.

Enjoy!

My license was for v8...not sure if I need to install that then add 8.1 or go directly to 8.1.....not sure how Microsoft handles that but will see.

My guess would be you could go directly to 8.1 - would be silly for them to make you go to 8 first.

If you do get Win 8, run all fo the updates and restart. Then go to the WIndows Store from the Start page and you will get the free update to 8.1.

It's well worth it! 8.1 allows you to enable the PC to boot up to the desktop instead of the Start page, among other things.

Good Luck with the upgrade. When I did what I thought was a downgrade from W7 to W8, I hated W8 totally but stuck with it grabbing 8.1 on the way and now almost 4 month late I love it.

Hi Jasper

Luckily I avoided Win8 completely...more by luck than judgement...but what you say resonates with me re. what I hear at work.  Clearly Win8.1 should have been the launch release...and no doubt Win9 will be a huge success (just like Win7 has been when compared to its predecessor).

Win 8.1 is not free, but the upgrade from 8 to 8.1 is.

I think that says tons about how bad Microsoft knows they screwed up with Win 8. I do not mind it, but 8.1 is what it shoudl have been from the get go.

Hi Corey that's what I meant but can't find the download to confirm all Win 8 users have to upgrade to 8.1 and I thought is was free for a certain time period? Also Win 8.1 update 1 looks real good IMO.

Well, shortly after posting this, I had to make an unexpected trip to Dallas for a meeting and just returned. After checking into this, I think I will wait until I have to buy another PC...or have a slow weekend needing something to do. It appears that I can use the Win 8 product key and then up grade to 8.1 free (still). And I will do this before long but it is an exercise in patience and the  rooster would likely resemble a scare crow tonight. Thanks for the tips though and no doubt Win 8.1 is much better than 8 was! :@

I agree, that's why I'm waiting for Win 9. 😉

I have Win 8.1 running on a 8" touchscreen tablet and I have to say its brilliant. I would take a guess that 50% of the win 8 haters probably have never used it. Just jumping on the MS hate wagon.

I think that you are spot on Roy...but I do not think that these persons are MS Haters but rather that it is the press just doing the usual and trying to be politically correct...as they see it.

I use Win8.1 on an 8inch tablet and the experience is superb...but my main system is Win7 64bit...so I have the best of both worlds.

I think a touch screen device is where 8 shines.  My wife got a new laptop with 8 on it, and the metro interface works well for that.  For non-touch screen, at least in 8.1 you can go straight to desktop now.

There should be clarification between 8 and 8.1. The difference is almost enough for 8.1 to be considered a major release on it's own.

Many people are not trying 8.1 due to bad experiences with 8 or bad press about 8. The newer 8.1 is a totally different animal than 8.

For me:
8 = Usable. Not quite as user friendly as Win7.
8.1 = Nice! User friendly and very customizable for tablets and desktops.

at first I hated 8 havign played w some of the beta builds, but after putting 8 on my work PC I started really liking it. As for 8.1 vs 8 I found the original release 8 to be perfectly acceptable. I've come to strongly prefer 8 to 7 and my next home PC will run 8.
