I keep getting a pop up stating I need to update google chrome when I do some searches

I believe that you can check in Chrome Menu on the upper right hand side and open help/About and Google Chrome will show you this below if Chrome needs to be updated. I would do this manually before clicking on that popup.
Then I'd advise you to have a Ad Blocker installed such as this one below:
