I am new to the Webroot community.

Are updates to Webroot done automatically during the subscription period?    If so, how do I check to see what Webroot version I have?       Thanks

Everything to do with updates is done automatically, it doesnt require any user input whatsoever 🙂

I am also a new user, I do think it is a little confusing to have a "check for updates" right click option in the system tray, only for a window to pop up and tell you it is done automatically. If it is totally redundant, then perhaps the option could be removed all together, but I do wonder if it is there as different editions of Webroot may act differently ?

The check for updates does technically have a function, it forces a client check amongst other things. For instance I fired up a Win Vista VM I haved booted up in probably a year and the client was a good bit out of date. It would have checked for an update itself eventually but clicking the "check for updates" forces the check and it updated right away.
