Or perhaps you've already pre-ordered an iPhone 6 or 6 Plus and are ready to party with a totally new handset. Either way, now is a great time to spruce up the security of your iOS device.

1. Wait

Getting a new operating system is exciting. Sometimes, it's like a whole new phone but for free! But Nico Sell, the founder of Wickr, advises iOS users to wait a few days until the dust settles. If you're using an older device, you might not want to update at all. By waiting, you avoid long wait times and a lengthy update process that incapacitates your phone in the middle of the day. You'll also avoid any zero-day attacks that the bad guys may have cooked up in the months prior to the iOS 8 release. Remember that anyone with an Apple developer account can get early access to iOS 8, and that includes the bad guys.
