No home upgrades for you, tight-fisted fanbois

By Jasper Hamill, 19 Jun 2014

Apple has soldered the memory into its new cheap-ish iMac in an apparent bid to make sure fanbois have no chance of souping up their new not-so-bargain-basement all-in-one computer, according to a teardown team.

The fruity firm has always been interested in making sure the world's landfill sites are packed with out-of-date Macs, and apparently fixing memory to the mobo in the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro laptops ensures they are more or less impossible to upgrade.

Upgrade specialists Other World Computing (OWC) tore down the new £899 iMac, which offers a perfect storm of what the reviewers seemed to feel was poor performance twinned with high price. With a puny 1.4GHz dual core Intel Core i5 processor, it offers 8GB of LPDDR3 memory.

So they expect me to pay over $1000 for something that cannot be upgraded at all, is low end to begin with, and cannot be repaired if it should fail.

Not.  I would rather buy a junk eMachine.  (I hate eMachines LOL!)
Well I don't like eMachines either so with my IMAC I upgraded the memory but that was years ago. So to upgrade my IMAC with one of these is totally out of the question! And you are so correct...

Really what will they think of next?
While I have never been an Apple fan, I had huge admiration for Jobs.  I didn't like his hardware and software (mainly software) so much, but he innovated.  Constantly.

This new iMac is not an innovation, it is a sellout in the name of having to do SOMETHING to draw new sales.

My opinion anyway.  :-)
Well David I do love my IMAC and the software and it's fast but it's a Oldie but goodie with new HD. But they don't make it easy to upgrade anything like the video card or Hard drive are hard to get too and you need a Geek Squad to do it.. 😉
