The sidebar in the macOS Finder is located on the left-hand section of every Finder window where you see small icons and names for folders or other items. 

It’s intended to give you one-click access to the items you use the most. To make it work most efficiently for you, you can tweak its various settings.

It’s amazing how many users put up with the defaults and waste time clicking additional buttons and menus to achieve something they could easily create a favourite or shortcut for!

Some people, and I support a few, don’t want to be bothered learning “something new” because they are just happy doing what they know.  I tend to agree with you Russell, but maybe this is why these things are options?
