Well anything can happen in these days; perhaps we'll see a freemium version ;)
You can now even get the Windows Enterprise without SA.

Well for one I cannot imagine that MS will give it away for free. However IF it is a lot better and user friendly than 8.1 (and I do not think that is too hard to do) it would be a great way to win back some of the users who have deserted across to the Apple stable.
