NEW YORK, Feb 6 (Reuters) - Meta Platforms (META.O), opens new tab will begin detecting and labeling images generated by other companies' artificial intelligence services in the coming months, using a set of invisible markers built into the files, its top policy executive said on Tuesday.

Meta will apply the labels to any content carrying the markers that is posted to its Facebook, Instagram and Threads services, in an effort to signal to users that the images - which in many cases resemble real photos - are actually digital creations, the company's president of global affairs, Nick Clegg, wrote in a blog post.

The company already labels any content generated using its own AI tools.
Once the new system is up and running, Meta will do the same for images created on services run by OpenAI, Microsoft (MSFT.O), opens new tab, Adobe (ADBE.O), opens new tab, Midjourney, Shutterstock (SSTK.N), opens new tab and Alphabet's (GOOGL.O) , opens new tab Google, Clegg said.
The announcement provides an early glimpse into an emerging system of standards technology companies are developing to mitigate the potential harms associated with generative AI technologies, which can spit out fake but realistic-seeming content in response to simple prompts.

The approach builds off a template established over the past decade by some of the same companies to coordinate the removal of banned content across platforms, including depictions of mass violence and child exploitation.
In an interview, Clegg told Reuters he felt confident the companies could label AI-generated images reliably at this point, but said tools to mark audio and video content were more complicated and still being developed.

This is a great start to what is surely going to be a problem going forward. But I’m not sure if this will help overall. There will always be another system(s) that will come along that will make some bogus claim that’s it’s their right to free speech to create phony images (and made up AI “news”) without declaring the source or if it were AI generated.  I’m fairly sure we have just seen the tip of the iceberg when it comes to phony images and stories made up by AI. Especially when it comes to this year’s elections.

Tip of the iceberg. And the Titanic is headed full speed towards it, and not enough can be done to stop it now.

I see so many images these days online where you really aren’t sure if they’re real or not. Especially on fan pages of celebrities. It really is getting to the point where you feel you cant believe anything!

Yes. But you can’t just block one and not others. She might be one of the main celebrities searched for right now but doesnt mean she’s the only one affected by this. Understand why they did it but what’s the point unless you block everything which you cant.

Agree with you there. It’s certainly not going to stop and i dread to see where it ends!

I agree it was just one example and it has happened to others.

And now the World News becomes even more fake. This is only the beginning, more to come. You will not know who or what to believe anymore on videos / TV. What a fake world we live in now. Very sad. ☹️

Yeah basically just sit back and watch everything change at a rate never seen before

I’m hoping they also watermark the images.  A label can be photoshopped out.
