Why no "lock"?

I downloaded WIN 10 recently and WSA seems to be functioning normally except that there is no longer the little lock that used to appear on the W icon to let you know it was active.  This makes me wonder if it is truly active.  Will there no longer be a lock shown?  I don't like just assuming that it is active.

Hello there, welcome to the Community

The lock icon does still work on Windows 10, but please note that it only shows when a supported web browser is the active window.  If you have a different program active, the lock will not appear.  That is the lock has worked for quite a while, but many users do not realize it as the browser usually IS the active window so the lock is seeming to be always on.

Microsoft Edge is not currently one of the browsers that will trigger the lock, but you are still protected.

When does the lock show up? I am running the latest version of Firefox, but I don't see the lock. I went to a couple of banking sites, but I didn't see a lock on the webroot icon then either. Or does the lock not show up until you log into your banking account?

I'm not sure if I've ever seen the lock in Windows 10...or maybe it's this version of firefox. I wasn't paying attention. But today Webroot found a threat in one file of a program I installed. It was the uninstaller. So now I'm looking for things to reassure myself that it's OK to go to my bank. That's why I started looking for the lock.

Several scans have all come up clean.

Hi Kev!

If you mean the lock on the Webroot symbol in the system tray, down there next to the clock, I am getting it on Firefox  I have upgraded to Windows 10, and have the latest version of Firefox installed.

You might try a clean re-intall of WSA to see if that helps!

Yes. That is what I meant. However, my webroot icon is in the hidden icons popup. Could that be the reason I don't see it? I'll try to explain my thinking.

I'm in Firefox or Chrome. I go to a banking site. I have to click on the up arrow to see the webroot icon. Does that take me out of the browser briefly, so lock doesn't show? Maybe if the icon was on the task bar? Or maybe that doesn't matter.

I checked my other computer today and it has the Best Buy subscription on it. The first computer had the Webroot only subscription. But neither one show the lock that I can tell. The Webroot icons are both in the hidden icon popup on both machines.

I did see the lock briefly one time on the first machine. Firefox was updated and I did see it then.

Another interesting...curious thing...

I'm on the latest version of firefox on the first machine...the Webroot only machine. The Webroot extensions have that warning, if you look in addons.

I checked the other machine..the Best Buy only machine...there was no warning. Then I checked the firefox version and it wasn't the latest version, but while I was checking Firefox updated. I went back and checked and there was still no warning on the Webroot extensions even though the version is 40 something.

Finally, last question...As long as all my shields are on, am I safe...even if I don't see the little lock on the Webroot icon. I think I probably am, but I'm a little spooked, as yesterday Webroot said a file contained malware. (This was the uninstaller from a program I had just installed. The file was moved to quarantine and I have scanned numerous times and nothing has been found, so I think I'm safe? I hope!

Thanks.

Having the lock in hidden icons means you will never see the lock: the Hidden Icons menu is of course the active screen element when you are looking at it, so the lock dissapears anyway.

You are protected even when the lock is not there.  Really, it was intended to drop using the lock symbol entirely a couple of years ago, but it was decided to let it remain.  You are protected all the time, so there really isn't much need for the lock at this point, though I am like you.  I like to see it LOL.

As for a fully updated copy of Firefox, there have been some changes from Mozilla over the last few days.  Please consult THIS THREAD for more information.
