scan has gone from ~2m to ~40min. run disk cleanup and %temp% search to no avail. Thoughts?

Go ahead and try a reboot and see if that helps your scanning in Webroot. Otherwise follow below:
 
Please follow the steps closely!
 

• Make sure you have a copy of your 20 Character Alphanumeric Keycode! Example: SA69-AAAA-A783-DE78-XXXX
• KEEP the computer online for Uninstall and Reinstall to make sure it works correctly
• Download a Copy Here (Best Buy Geek Squad Subscription PC users click HERE) Let us know if it is the Mac version you need.
• Uninstall WSA and Reboot
• Install with the new installer, enter your Keycode and do NOT import any settings if offered by the installer as you can set it up as you like once it's done
• Let it finish it's install scan
• Reboot once again

Please let us know if that resolves your issue? You can also Submit a Support Ticket and they will check this issue out for you. This is free of charge with a Webroot subscription.
 
 

That didn't make a difference.
 
Did additional research via google and found and deleted 9k+ files in
 
appdatalocalmicrosoftwindows emporary internet files
 
BUT - still scanning subdirectory Content.IE5 which I can neither find nor delete.
 
Reinstalled, and scan is now down to ~6min, much improved.  If someone can tell me how to delete that Content.IE5, it would be still faster and greatly appreciated.  Not using IE at all on this system.

Well that's great the Webroot scan is down 6 min, Which is very good.

Have you tried CCleaner? This is a very excellent program. It's by Piriiform.com to clean up your files. But make sure you make a Restore point before using it.

The Content.IE5 folder is a hidden system folder and thereforet his folder is not visible in the C:Documents and SettingsUsernameLocal SettingsTemporary Internet Files directory.
 
To make Content.IE5 folder visible  you will need to do the following:
 
1. Press Start and select Run.
2. Type 'cmd'.
3. At the command prompt, type dir /a "%Userprofile%Local SettingsTemporary Internet Files*.*"

Unfortunately, there will be index.dat files in the folder that only specialist cleaning software has a chance of cleaning/getting rid of but as soon as removed they are recreated...but hopefully the scan is now even less than 6 minutes? :D

6 months later, Content.IE5 started getting filled again and slowing down the scan 😞 Dates in the directory show dates only from early May 2017 forward - which is when the slowdown started *again*. One was held open by the Skype process.

Thanks for the update. Further to what you have stated I have done some checking, check pre & post running CCleaner, and from what I can see to the effect of that on the Content.IE5 folders on my system, you doing the sam on your system so resolve the issue.
 
On my system CCleaner cleared the contebts of the folders with no ill effect (as I had expected)...so that would be my recommendation re. how you proceed.
 
But as always, before you run something like CCleaner please make sure that you have created  System Restore Point, in case something goes awry (very unlikely in my experience of using CCleaner...but better safe than sorry).
 
Let us know how you get on if yo decide to try this out.
