A report highlighting the top data breach incidents in the world and the number of records stolen from the targeted organizations shows that, on average, about 23 data records were lost or stolen every second in Q2 2014.
The report comes from data protection company SafeNet and relies on publicly available information gathered through their Breach Level Index tool.
According to this information, in Q2 2014, at least 1,355 records were exposed every minute, and simple math shows a daily figure of 1,951,724 records.

The second quarter of 2014 saw 237 data breaches that exposed more than 175 million customer records worldwide, according to the SafeNet Breach Level Index.
That's almost 2 million customer records stolen or lost per day.
The retail industry was hit hardest, with more than 145 million customer records stolen or lost, 83 percent of the total for the quarter. And while healthcare was hit by 23 percent of all data breaches for the quarter, the breaches themselves were small, accounting for less than 1 percent of all records exposed.
These data breaches can have a real impact on companies' reputations. A separate survey by SafeNet of 4,500 adults in the U.S., the U.K., Germany, Japan and Australia found that 65 percent of respondents would never, or are very unlikely to, do business again with a company that had experienced a data breach where financial data was stolen. Similarly, 57 percent respondents said they would never, or were very unlikely to, do business again with a company that had experienced a data breach that exposed personally identifiable information (PII).

In IT security, worst case scenarios became commonplace in 2014, and there’s no end in sight. Headline-making data breaches will likely continue into this year, as businesses, governments and regulators play catch-up to this threat.
The nature of the attacks is changing as well, according to Gemalto, a digital security firm. Records that help criminals with identity theft, which is harder to catch and stop, are the leading goal of attackers. The recently disclosed breach of 80 million records at Anthem, the health insurer, was an identity theft attack.
Gemalto, in its annual Breach Level Index report (see PDF) released Thursday, said there were, globally, 1,514 breach incidents that became public, with the number of records compromised exceeding 1 billion.
In terms of number of records breached, 2014 represented a 78% increase over the prior year.
