Malware researchers at Trend Micro have discovered a new variant of ransomware that locks up Android smartphones and Android TVs.

FLocker, which is short for Frantic Locker, has posed a threat to Android smartphones since May 2015, but one version of several thousand variants has now gained the ability to infect smart TVs.

The malware will lock a device's screen and then displays a ransom message in the local language, purportedly from US Cyber Police or another law-enforcement agency.

It appears nothing can hide from this ransomware or I should say is exempt from its clutches.

Very interesting...but I cannot say unexpected...it was only going to be a matter of time...as per usual. Have to say also that I am glad that I am old school and don't go in for all of this 'connected' or 'hubbed' rubbish that comes with Smart TVs these days...KISS...Keep it Stupidly Simple is the best way to defeat these sorts of threats. ;)

I agree totally Baldrick. There is no need for everything to be "connected" but people will buy into the idea that they need all the latest connected gadgets, it is all a marketing ploy and people should wise up to it.

I never really found the need for my TV to be connected to the Internet. If I wanted to watch Youtube or Netflix on a big screen I would just buy a bigger monitor. Soon I am sure everything to the toaster will be connected to the Internet, we already have kettles...

"You may create toast at the press of a button allowing you to return home to the taste of perfectly brown toast"

Silly but totally possible, it is the future.
