Which email provider is more suited for the paranoid user?

Revelations of broad NSA surveillance and the constant flurry of data breaches have led many of us to become more security conscious. There are now more options than ever to communicate securely with encrypted messaging apps, and security mechanisms such as password managers and two-factor authentication have become commonplace.

Can't believe that anybody who considers themselves remotely paranoid would ever consider Gmail. Whilst it might be secure in the sense that Google will prevent hackers, their whole modus operandi is to invade your privacy by scanning your emails and inserting adverts where they can and adding all that data to your profile.
 
I don't use ProtonMail either but if I had to choose betweenthe two, it would be no contest.
